Congratulating
The Graduates
r The 1951 crop of graduates of Per
quimans County schools may have
finished their educational training
but they must realize, as they face
this perplexed world, that the future
holds a problem for them that can-
not be solved entirely by the fact that
they hold S diploma. "
We see no reason for pessimism on
the part of the graduates but noth
ing is to be gained by ignoring the
stern facts that confront modern civi
lization. To learn these facts, to un
derstand their causes and to intelli
gently meet them is to score a life
success, regardless of the tricks that
fate may have in store. . "
The Weekly congratulates the young
who have earned the diplomas they
receive. Due recognition of their suc
cessful study is well-merited. After
all, the young students have met and
mastered difficulties that, at their
age, are equal to any that they will
meet later on.
Red Faces
The continuing parade of Hollywood
ex -Communists before the House Un
American Activities Commiteee is in
: structive. Many of the witnesses were
attracted in more youthful days to the
,, emotional periphery of the Comma
nist movement' As they am np
.against the hard core of party dogma
the party discipline they, became dis
illusioned. Their- faces are how far
more red than their thinking.
Charity is in order for these peni
tents. Some of them are risking their
reputations and livelihoods by coming
forward to make, a clean breast of
their past mistakes and cooperate in
uncovering further subversion. The
New Testament is authority for re
joicing more over "one sinner that
repenteth" than over ninety-nine Just
persons who "need no repentance."
Yet, strangely enough, there is a
tendency to penalize the ex-ommu-nist
who has had the courage to break
away from his former affiliations de
spite the knowledge that he was
thereby opening himself to peraecu
. tion by Communist arid anti-Communist
alike. One would think that so
ciety would hold out to the confused
young radicals from the, wavering
edge of communism every inducement
to prove xoeir loyally euecuveiy wnen
they have seen the light
A distinction needs to be drawn be
tween, the muddled "idealists" who
gravitated , toward communism be
cause of. some vague hope of a Uto
pian new order and the tough power
addicts, the disciplined fanatics, the'
trained and tried agents who form the
permanent cadres of communism.
When the latter desert they seem
sometimes almost as untrustworthy in
their anti-communism as they were
formerly in their communism, as rigid
in their thinking, seeing everything in
terms of black and white, : merely
switching the devils and saints in their
world of absolutes.
But the red-faced, faltering prodi
gal is another matter. He needs to be
welcomed back when he tires of eating
husks.

(Perquimans County, like every other
community, furnishes its quota of vic
tims to the highway toll every year.
It is not enough for us -to eit back
and say, "it wont happen to us," or
to be satisfied the Highway Patrol
will prevent all accidents. The Pa
trol does an excellent job but it needs
the help and support of every citizen
in supporting the work of the traffic
officers and by careful driving by
motorists.
(Let's save lives by taking time to
drive carefully.
WOODVILLE m. ML U. MEETS
The W M. U. of Woodville Baptist
Church met with Mrs. Charlie Wilson
on Tuesday afternoon, May 22. .
The meeting was called to order by
the resident. Mrs. A. T. Gregory. "O
Zion Haste," was used as opening
hymn. Mrs. H. C. West led in prayer.
The minutes' of the previous meeting
were read and approved. Twelve mem
bers were present and one visitor.
Mrs. Johnnie Gregory invited the club
to meet with her in June. Afterthe
business was transacted the program
was turned over to Mrs. JRoy Nixon,
the program chairman. The devotional
was conducted by Mrs. Nixon, Mrs.
Katherine Elliott and Mrs. Johnnie
Gregory.
: "Rescue The Perishing," was then
sung by the group and Mrs. A. R.
Cook led in prayer, t The subject for
the month was "Women Undergirding
the Spread of the Gospel." Mrs. A.
L. Gregory gave an interesting and
inspiring talk on this subject.
"Bless Be The Tie" was used as
the closing prayer.
Delicious refreshments were served
by the hostess, Mrs, Charlie Wilson.
