What do yon know about the weeds and grasses that give you so much i trouble 11 recently : talked , with a man who has gardened for' several years but did not know the difference between "crab grass" and "Bermuda grass." Just in case some of the read erg of this column are also confused, crab grass is an annual plant, catch ing iroot at all joints. It is a serious , pest at this time of year but is killed t out by'cold weather. In the garden it muat be controlled by frequent cul tivation and hand pulling. In the . lawn it may be killed by special chem ' ical sprays. , . On the other hand, Bermuda grass sometimes called wire grass is a .-, perennial plant, catching root at the joints and also sending -out many un derground stemsby which it Spreads ravidly and lives over" from year to . vear. ' Freezing may kill the above ground stem but not the underground ' "stems. Clean cultivation, and smoth v ering it with heavy crop growth are : about the only controls. I have kill ; ed'ifcin the garden by covering with mulching paper.. Tnere are many other "grasses and weeds that give us trouble in the gar den and there are no easy methods of control. Also, in the fall of the year we are prone to let the weeds go in the- portions of the garden where we nave no crops. These weeds will ma ture millions of seeds for future- gen erations. Many weed seeds remain alive for years in garden soils, be cause .they have been buried boo deep iy. .;' As ; soon as cultivation ." brings them closer to the surface and con ditions are favorable, they immediate ly germinate.
