- THE FRIENDS
YEARLY MEETING
The Friends 254 Yearly meeting has
just been brought to a close at uuil-
ford College. The Yearly Meeting
is composed of eight quarterly meet
ings or 74 monthly meetings. These
eight quarterly meetings contain a
membership of more than 13,000.
There are enrolled in its Sunday
Schools nearly 9,000. "It has 91 re
corded ministers. The North Carolina
Yearly Meeting corresponds with 40
other yearly meetings. Some of these
yearly meetings are in Europe, Africa
and other parts of the wdrld. The
meetings corresponding with each oth
er are in full fellowship. A letter
of greetings is exchanged with each
of the corresponding yearly meet
ings. ., K
The Society of Friends is one qf the
oldest churches in the State. It has
not sought membership for the matter
of receiving a list of names. They
believe there is but one trne church
and it is composed of all true be
lievers of all creeds and races. They
call the places where they meet for
worship meeting houses and not
churches. ' Instead of organizing a
church they set up a monthly meet
ing. Their ministers are recorded in
stead of being ordained. In their
business meetings they never take a
vote but are governed by the con
census of opinion. The concensus pf
opinion must be unanimous before any;
matter is recorded as adopted. The
Friends . practice none of the ordi
nances. At one time the Friends used no
musical instruments neither did they
have any choirs or salaried ministers.
Instead of taking an oath they affirm,
they are allowed that privilege in the
courts. At one time they wore a dis
tinctive garb that would distinguish
them as Friends anywhere they went.
At one time the, men sat in meetings
with their hats on. They only re
moved them during prayer. ' The law
in North Carolina allows them to en
ter court and even sit as a juror with
their hats on. The men 'and women
held their meetings for transaction of
business separate. In designating the
days of the weeks and the months if
the year they used the numeral in
stead of names. In conversation they
wed the pronouns thee and. thou.
Many , if not all these customs have
now been discarded, a . , ;
The Friends have-always stressed
education. Guilford College may have
been ; the only school in the South
that did not close during the Civil
War, After the Surrender they built
and operated church schools oat many
of their meeting places. One of the
cardinal doctrines of the Friends
Church has been peace. They have
always heen conscientious objectors.
They believe in and have taught the
brotherhood v of the entire ' human
face. Today they are known and
favored around the world for their
peace principles. In many walks of
life the Friends have furnished many
leaders. . In proportion to their mem
bership in England they have sent
more members in Parliament than
any other denomination.
