Advertising rates furnished by request FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19, 1951., Farm Prosperity Essential Not so long ago, an economic expert declared that ."agriculture - supports one-fifth of the population and on it ' rests the nation's economic structure." This was not the statement of a farmer or an official of an agricul- ' tural association! The fact stated by this financial expert is very often overlooked by the leaders of business and industry and, more unfortunately, by the leaders of many towns and cities that are "situated in the heart of agricultural sections. f In view of the importance of agri culture, as an economic foundation of the nation, it becomes the business of everybody to make farming an at tractive economic enterprise, with the probability of an income that will be reasonably certain aiyl with arrange' menta in connection with labor and social conditions that will make agri culture as alluring as a factory or desk job. ' Population Center Shifts The ' center of population of the United States, according to the Cen sus Bureau ,ia now eight miles north, northwest of Olney, Illinois. This is some forty-two miles west and seven and one-half miles south of the 1940 center of population, which was near Carlyle, Indiana. : i : The reader may be interested in ' knowing what the center of popula tion ia. A a we understand it intricate what place in the country constitutes a center, upon which a theoretical plane would rest level. This involves the assumption that each individual would exert an influence proportionate to his distance from the point, which means that the leverage of a dozen persons in California might counter balance one hundred persons in New York. " --vf :;. This may be a scientific method of determining the center of population. It may be the only possible method of making such' a calculation. . Never theless, in our minds, the center of population in the United States is the place where one can reach, in the shortest time, the greatest number , of individuals. '' .'.' v.-.' ' .' We certainly have no desire to take from Olney, Illinois, the distinction that came to it on October 18, when a marker was dedicated, with appro priate radio broadcasting of the event It may be, and we hope it is, that Ol ney is likewise the particular spot from which One can reach all of the people in the United States in the " most convenient time. "Open Palm" Too Prevalent We hasten to approve the pending bilr in the U. S. Senate to bar offi- - cials of any national political party from accepting fees or other bene fits from negotiating with federal 'agencies on behalf of themselves or others. .: . We think the prohibition should be extended much further, so as to inj elude every form, of activity by which a person, holding any position, public or private, accepts additional compen sation or other benefits for perform ing any task within the range of his official or unofficial duties. . Somebody has suggested that the "open palm" has become the symbol, not only of some officials but many ' connected with private business en- , . terpnses. In fact the vice' is pre valent in business as well as in gov ernmental circles. We have heard t i . j i. t'BHits men relate, wiin consiaeraoie pride, hw thejr Coined extra favors or concessions by the simple device ; of greasing the palm or extending yecial favors to the person in a po sition to deliver the goods.
