Commission a bronze medal and Cm
urn of five hundred dollara to be
paid as needed for a worthy purpose,
o be approved by the Executive Cim-
.mltttee of the Commission, .
The award is in recognition of Mr.
Robertson's heroism in saving the
lives of a mother and two children
from death by burning-, at Statesville,
, on November 11, 1950.
The letter, dated October 26, ad
vising Mr. Robertson of the award,
which had been forwarded from
Statesville, was received today.
Mr. Robertson, who is 81, is the
son of Mr. and Mia. J. A. Robert
son of Statesville. Asked about the
rescue, he said, fit really was Just
nothing.
But the facts are that be was
awakened shortly after midnight ' on
the occasion and became aware of a
great blaze of light. Believing bis own
home was on fire, he ran to save his
three children. His wife was in a hos
pital at the time. Upon emerging
from bis home, he discovered that the
borne of his next door neighbor was
in flames. ""Crashing the glass panel
of the front door with his shoulder he
dashed through the aperature. vHe
unlocked the door after gaining en
trance and made his way to the bed
rooms where he awakened the mother
and got her and one child out of the
building. He then went back into the
blazing building and got the second
child. It was only after the house
had gone up in flames, which was only
a matter of minutes after the rescue,
that he realized that his chest and
knee were cut and that his feet were
painfully burned. :
Mr. Robertson, who succeeds Eldon
' Winslow as. Wildlife Protector, is
living at the home of J. P. Perry, on
