College Education High
Th vrmnver tmneration these dava
is finding that a college education is
not easily paid for. Because money
is comparatively plentiful at tnis
time, the real effects of increased
tuition bills- and increased fees in
colleges has not yet produced its full
impact.
However, colleges all over the
United States have been forced to
increase their tuition rates, room and
board charges have skyrocketed in
many instances, and the cost of ma
terials, clothes and food not to men
tion other essentials is up apprecia
bly. A recent .survey showed that
tuition at many colleges has doubled
in less than teh" years and in many
cases they have risen far more rapidly
than the cost of living and the aver
age pay check.
This poses a serious question for all
Americans, since this country's herit
age is, to a large extent, tied up wfth
low cost, liberal education. Most of
this country's great leaders have re
ceived their foundation in a liberal
auto nrfinnl nf Hnme kind. 1 ; i
The colleges are not to be .blamed,
necessarily, because, in many cases,
their endowments have shrunk in pro
portion to the increase in inflation
anrl in nfnsi oaspu their lnntr-time
investments pay interest rates today j
which are consideraoiy lower tnan tne
average and not in line with increased
costs of operation. The problem is an
: American problem, which may event
ually have to be decided by the tax
payer, in one form or the other?

White? House '
White Again
The White House in Washington
: neain looks as it is suDDOsed to look

, the scaffolding taken down after three
. years of -remodeling, v. It is .reported

disgusted with , the repeated delays

speedily. '
.Taxpayers will be interested to
know that the three-year remodeling
job cost i6,B00fiOO and has required
the services of an army of workmen
' ever since' late 1948. The Executive
mansion is said to-be redone,, inside
and out ." "
V In this connection, it is interesting
responsible for the . remodeling Mr.

the modern conveniences of the new
White House for any considerable
