It Is a splendid crane of lessons
which we art to have for the remain
der of this garter. The' Ten Com-!
mandmehts and Jesus' expansion of'
each law; the XJld Testament legis-,
latfon and the New Testament in-J
Testament and the Christianity of the
New. yi'V'v -.v-'
The law! wa given to Moses i
, God; grace and truth came by Jesus
Christ. The Ten Commandments are
an attempt at expressing1 in, words
God's code for man's conduct, but only
Jesus can tell us how to live rightly
with one another. Jesus goe behind
the outward act to the inward motive
, and it is, after all, the motive that
counts. Standards of morality have
differed from age to age; the Chris
tian's privilege is to look above all
other standards to Christ's standard of
absolute righteousness. The goal of
ils teaching is Christ-like living.
Nothing which Jesus ever said, in
an or bis teachings, could ever be
"rightly construed as contrary to the
law which God had established. Jesus
' declared, "Think not that I came to
destroy the law or the prophets:
came not to destroy, tart to fulfill."
: Jesus was fully aware that the Phari
sees would accuse him of doing Just
that destroying the Mosaic law.
A study of verses. 20-48 show us
that .they are a series of illustra
tions of the way in which Christ would
have the law and the .prophets ful
filled, for He would have His follow
ers go much farther than the Old
Testament law required. While Moses
and the prophets had' laid a firm
foundation; on which to build, God's
revelation to them was not final. It
was necessary for Jesus to emphasize
that obeying the letter of the law was
not enough that one should also obey
the spirit of the law.. , ;
Jesus also declared that "Til heav
en and earth shall pass away, one jot
or one tittle shall in no wise pass
away from the law, till all things be
accomplished." The : jot was the
smallest of the Hebrew letters, as
Iota was of the Greek. Tittle is the
projecting point m some -of the He
brew letters. "The small strokes that
distinguish, from one another other
wise simular letters of the Hebrew
alphabet." In other words, God's
law is immutable and everlasting, and
it is as necessary that we obey this
low now as it was in the days of the
, prophet, 'Moses.
However, in his conversation with
the right young ruler, Jesus showed
that Just keeping the Commandments
is1 not enough.' In questioning this
young man, Jesus learned that he had
scrupulously kept all the Command
ments from his youth up and yet he
still realized that something was
lacking in his heart. "What Jack I
yet?" he asked, in his quest for etern
al life.
Realizing what was wrong with
the young man, Jesus counselled that
he go and sell all of . his property,
give the proceeds to the poor and then
come and . fallow (Him. ' Ordinarily,
it would not be wise for a wealthy
man to give away ah" of his property,
rather it would be best for him to
manage it wisely and spend it gener
ously, for the welfare of others. But
Jesus realized that this young, max
was so wrapped up in his possessions
that they kept him from God and, in
order to get into .right relations with
his Heavenly Father, was necessary,
for him to part with air of it. . .
, Paul wisely declared, "The love of
money -is the root of all evil," and
Emerson also said that the worst
thing about- money truly i that Kr
onen costs bo much! faced with the
choice between earthly wealth and
"tuMBnre in fieavftn." vounir man
turned his back on the very thing
which could have given him the most I;
real contentment. .
Jesus declared, in John's gospel,
"Ye search the scriptures, because ye
think in them ye have eternal life."
While he is not condemning the
"searching of . the scriptures," he is
dectarinf that the scriptures: are only
a gui-e, a map along the Journey of
' life that the only way to "eternal
life" is by acceptance of Christ, who
is the my Way. F.vB. Meyer ad
