We have for this week's study a con
sideration of the Fourth Command,!
ment, which concerns the Sabbath Day. '
We have seen that the First Com
mandment has to do with the oneness 1
or uniqueness of God, the Second Com
mandment with the worship of God,
the Third Commandment with the rev
erence for God and the commandment
for our study-this week, the Fourth,
with the right use of the day of God.
A close study of the Ten Com
mandments, as a whole, reveals the
fact that the first three Command
ments concern man's duty to God;
the last six concern man's duty to his
f ellowmen, while the FourtH Com
mandment forms a link between the
two having to do with man's duty
tcr God in the, setting apart or keep
ing holy one drfy in seven, and his
moral duty to others in regard to the
keeping of the Sabbath Day.
As a means of causing his people
to remember him and his goodness to
them and to be faithful unto him, and,
also, as a means of enriching their
own lives, God gave unto them the
Sabbath Day as a day of rest and wor
ship. ! ; ' :"
Quite a bit of discussion and dis
sention has arisen in recent years as
to the proper observance of the Sab
bath. If one is really sincere in seek
ing he right manner of keeping the
Sabbath, he has only to recall the
words of the Fourth Commandment,
"Remember the Sabbath Day to keep
it holy."
The word "holy" eliminates the pos
sibility of much that some have ac
cepted as a proper observance of the
Sabbath. Instead of being a sacred
or holy day, many 'people have
thoughtlessly made it a holiday-
day in which , self its wants, needs
and desires are enthroned and all
thoughts of God and his kingdom
.forgotten.':' . i
The word "Sabbath" " in Hebrew
means to break off, or to desist, or
simply a time of cessation from work.
Someone has said, "The greatest gift
God ever made to the world was the
gift of His Son. Next in importance
to this gift we may place the gift of
the Sabbath day, for it was given for
our: highest benefit" God, in his
wonderful provision for man. realized
his need for a day of rest physical,
mental and spiritual."
When God gave man the Sabbath,
. he was not laying a burden on him,
He knew that man's body would grow
stronger and be capable of more ser
vice, if he rested one day in seven.
A great business man, when asked if
he thought the Sabbath was beneficial
to man, said: "The Sabbath day is
for our iphysical good. AH nature
needs periods of rest. Animals thrive
better and do more work, u given
regular periods of rest. Men are the
same.' Even machinery and tools. of
iron and steel need occasional rest,
or they lose their durability. OPhyst
clans have found that the keeping of
the Sabbath improves health, and it
has been proved over and over that
people can accomplish .more work if
they rest 6ne day in seven.'"
Let na never forget that the Sab
bath s God's day. It does not be
long to us to do with as we please.
It is a day set apart from the other
six days, on which man works lor turn'
self, and there should be a complete
cessation of all ordinary labor which'
18 not aosouneiy necessary, me uay
should be made one of real rest and
recreation through worship.
How did Jesus keep the , Sabbath
when he was on earth? , First,. he al
ways went to Je synagogue and took
part in the formal worship of Ms day.
But he did not consider that this was
all that he should do. He rendered
unselfish service to others, healing
the sick, comforting the sad and bles
sing all with whom he came in con
tact v.:: ,: r ':
Surely? we, as Christians, need to-j
look no further for an example of
proper Sabbath observance or how we
may profitably "remember the Sab
bath day to keep it holy.'f Let' be
so busy doing' those things w. should
do that we will have no time to .do
those we know we shouldn't lo.

There is a profound difference between these two
days ... ;
MOTHER'S Day with the accent on Mother is
the second Sunday in May, when we honor Mother
hood, and express our deep affection for Mother.
Mother's DAY with the accent on Day is every day
of the year. It is' Mother's unending labor of love. It
is Monday's wash and Tuesday's ironing, the meals to
be cooked and the beds to be made, the bruises to be
healed and the prayers to be heard. .
And at the close of her DAY, Mother has prayers
of her own for her little-ones, her husband and her
self. . ,
God is answering many of those prayers through
the Church. "With its effective program of religious
education and worship the Church can supply the
Spiritual needs in Mother's DAY . . . and in your DAY
