LDail may230June607 ' Be Sure To Vote Another primary election will be VioiH in the county tomorrow, to de termine the nomination for the office of Register of Deeds, and the state office of Associate Justice. (While it is highly probable that the number of votes cast in the run-off primary will fall far short of the num ber of votes cast on May 81, it be hooves all eligible voters to go to the polls and vote tomorrow. The campaign conducted by the candidates seeking both the office of Register of Deeds and Associate Jus tice has been on a high level and the candidates are to be congratulated upon their manners and actions while campaigning for the nomination. New Use for TV The British Admiralty has found a new use for television. The Admiral ty recently succeeded in locating the sunken submarine Affray, which was sunk off Alderney Island during the war. Though echo-sounding had lo cated many hulks in the area, it took television to identify the sub as the Affray. The Admiralty reports ithat a tele vision set can be lowered to 1,000 feet and that "officers, sitting in a dark ened room, can examine the ocean bottom as they pass over it. The only shortcoming of the new system is that it is only a black-and- white .picture." "An Admiralty research enirineer savs color television would .V- m.tA wmMk ea4-ioT?afYTT onI 1 the pictures would not be monotonous-! ly green or blue. iWhether or not the Admiralty gets its color, the new de tection system seems to herald a new era in salvaging operations, which will reclaim many cargoes from excessive depths which have long defied sal vagers. The Railroads Stir Faced with a steady decline in pas senger travel since iWorld War II, 14 leading railroads in the East recently took steps to recover business which is being lost to the airlines and high ways. These railroads reduced' coach rates, effective this month, by 26 per cent on round trip tickets for groups of three or more and for family groups by permitting children under 12; with a parent, to travel free. It is interesting to note that in every year since 1930,' with the exception of the war period, the nation's rail roads have incurred a loss in passen ger train operations. Their loss last year alone amounted to $581,600,000. This is the largest loss yet incurred in a year. - ' .- In an effort to reduce these losses, ' the railroads have 1 increased - fares steadily since the end of iWorld War II. They also installed new equip ment and completed faster schedules, but, despite huge expenditures in this field, the railroads so far have not yet succeeded in reversing the down ward trend in passenger travel on the i railroads. ' " , ' i Generally spcfaking, the heaviest! losses sustained by the railroads in passenger operations are caused by short-distance passenger trains. The t h r o u g h, long-distance passanger ' - trains have generally earned profits. Because the railroads have increased rates to the point where further in creases will Certainly drive customers to the airlines (which are, reducing fares) and to other means of travel, it is vital that the railroad companies : find new ways of reducing their costs. :, Costs could probably be reduced if new, more efficient bookkeeping and ticket-selling systems were adopted. . However, because more efficiency in oneration iwonlH -rpJnnfuA Iawai Am. ployees, and because labor unions fight any move to. cut employment, . this is a major dilemma 'unsolved-by railroad management. Unless a solu tion is eventually worked out, the American public must expect more ; and more discontinued trains and con tinued high rates!.
