" ' ' nEHDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1952. Deep Freeze Surgery v ' Recently, doctor at the Univer sity of, Minnesota performed an in- tricate heart operation by "deep freezing" the patient and temporari ly stopping the flow of blood. The miss AUCUTURJ IIOW Was tWfiKU xor xivo u ." minutes, long enough for the surgeons to sew up a hole in the patient's ; heart. . . . ' " . . ' 'Afterwards, one of the doctors pre-, dieted that refrigeration might be the answer to the "search for a ' method to worjr inside a bloodless heart." Another said he believed the operation- was "the first time re frigeration had been used to perform ' cardiac surgery." Dr. Floyd Lewis, 36, who was in charge of the operation, also believes the operation may open a new avenue to heart surgery whkh has long been one of the most difficult of all operations. Parents Grade Teachers The State of Michigan is experi menting with a novel idea in the field of public education. The school teach ers are being given report cards on which their work has been . graded. The parents are grading the teach ers! ' "' Dr. Lee M. Thurston, state super intendent of public instruction, be lieves that the grading will result "in a better school system as a natural consequence if intelligently pursued." . And, incidently, the schools and the teachers are making a pass ing grade. '-- The parents do not feel, however, that the schools are? doing much in helping their children to develop, po ktness. More titan 75 per cent of the parents -think that there is not enough vocational education in the schools, and they are .willing to pay v higher taxes, if that be necessary to get more .vocational training. - Very few of the parents felt that learning to drive a car was of major importance. Yet three out of .four thought that teachers' salaries were . too low to attract well-prepared and conscientious teachers, or to 'hold good - teachers. -v' V " i J Parents 'were asked this question: 1'Are today's youngsters who , have ' finished school as well educated as those you knew when you were a child?" By a vote of more than three-to-one, parents voted that chil- : , dren today are at least as well edu cated as they were in the old days. Communism In The Philippines Philippine Defense Secretary Ram on Magsaysay recently told the Southeast Asia Veterans' Conference, in Manila, that the government of the Philippines had ""stopped the enemy's advance and turned the tide and now has him -squirming to survive." Mr. , Magsaysay was referring to tiie Conn muniat underground movement in the Jfmlippines. ' , - His .statement is encouraging, be cause only a year ago, the Communist threat' in the . Philippines appeared to be a real one. The statement as also made at an opportunte time, since the Southeast Asia Veterans' ,Con. ference i Manila was the first meet. ing of its kind in that part of the worior4Jne purpose feeing to exchange views on now,W Beat U3imurusm; v. '. Said Mr. ; Magsaysay, on. the Com munast movement in the Philiwineft: "Today we catt, report tiiat Commu t nists military etfort is demoralised ,. and broken, his raids reduced to only , occasional sorties in desperate search ' for goods' and supplies, and confined , to isolated places.", ' No doubt, this was encouraging to .delegations from Indo-Chlna, TradHand, and the Malay , axates. . ?
