Feb6 A Fine Record Our congratulations this .veek tp J. W. Nowell and his group of forest fire rangers, who through the forest fire prevention service, established a fine record in Perquimans County in 1952. This record revealed the bounty had only 11 forest fires during the year and loss was held to a minimum of $539. With timfcerland being one of our chief resources we hope the record of this department can and will be maintained in keeping losses at a low figure. We also urge the public to continue their cooperation with this program by securing burning permits before starting brush fires, or burning Over lands near woodlands. Public coopera tion with the fire rangers will assure a continuation of this fine record. Smith on U. S. Spies General Walter Bedell Smith, the retiring chief of the Central Intelli gence Agency, recently said the U. S. Intelligence Service was as good as any in the world, with the exception of that of the Soviet Union. If General Smith's analysis is an accurate one, it represents quite an achievement, since the United States did not maintain any sizeable espion age system before World War II. The Soviet Union's espionage system has been functioning for many years and the beginning of the Communist system in the United States took place many decades ago. General Smith believes the Soviet advantage lies mainly in the fact that information is easily obtained in the United States, whereas U. S. spies have a difficult time inside the Iron Curtain gaining access to restricted information. General Smith estimated that, in a few years, the U. S. Intelligence Ser vice would be the best in the world, partly because the C. I. A. is now developing a corps of career offi cers, which will provide the agency with fully and properly trained per sonnel for the first time. One inter esting note in 'General Smith's re marks was the statement that the U, S. did not bank too heavily on inter national espionage. He called this "the least productive of sources." Most intelligence work, Smith as serted, is a process of painstaking checking and detailed appraisals. Much of this careful analytical work is "ac tually drudgery according to the re tiring chief. This 21st day of January, 1953. TV. H. PITT, Clerk Superior Court. Jan23,30jFeb6,13 A tremendous supply of beef is moving through wholesale markets and orocessiner olant-o to stores at present and the price paid for much of this beef, on the hoof, was the lowest since 1949, In late January, Chicacn Dackera were oavina' an aver. age of only $25.0Q a hundred pounds lor steers. Vnly two months ago, prices averaged $32 a hundred pounds, and, in January. 1952, the price was an average of $34.25. While the retail market has not re fleeted lower on-the-hoof prices for some time the long decline was finally realized in late January when a sharp wave of price-cutting swept in the country's retail meat .markets. In Chicago, packers expect the present trend to continue a while longer and, thus, the prices of retail cuts of beef may continue to go down for a time. 'As has been pointed out by many experts, appraising the ioh fumntr hn new Administration, declining beef prices, ana otner rarm prices, pose the Administration of President Eis enhower with a serious nnVhlem. Bmr. ever,- the declining nricea ' arA irood news to the housewife. wio h an lhaon Paying abnormally high prices for good cuts of beef in recent years. The nousewire is also benefiting by de creases in lamb prices in most sections of the country. , v Some of the leading packers have oeen selling premium lamb leg at 59c a pouno, compared, to a price of $1 a pound only a few months ago. Poul try prices have also dropped. Thus, the meat outlook for the housewife is brighter than it has been in years.'
