Bradley this month removes a familiar military figure, known to many soldiers as the "G. I.'s General", from the U. S. scene, His retirement from active service brings to an end the story-book rise of a poor American boy to fame and an international reputation. ' Bradley was field commander of the largest force of U. S. fighting troops assembled together in World War II. It was his men who achieved the break-through at St. Io in August, 1944, and the tactical plan was his. He later became the nation's first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in which post he served two terms. In his book, President Dwight D. Eisenhower praises Bradley most highly, describing him as having al ways performed the task assigned him and being the man who never disappointed his Supreme Commander in all the difficult days of fighting in Europe. Aside from military achievements, however, the success of Omar Bradley is a pure and refresh ing American success story. After finishing high school in Missouri, Bradley went to work for a railroad. He did not have the money to go to college. A friend suggested he go to one of the service academies and Bradley replied he didn't even have enough money to go to a Mis souri college. Upon learning that they paid him, however, to attend a service academy, Bradley became in terested. "Omar" wrote his Congressman, who informed him that the" appoint ment had already been made, but that he was welcome to stand the examina tion as an alternate in case the prin ciptal failed to pass entrance examina tions. Bradley talked it over with his former school superintendent and fi nally said he would take the examina tion if his railroad employer gave him the day off. . The railroad not only gave him the day off, but gave him transportation, and Omar Bradley stood the West Point examination. Shortly afterwards he was informed that the principal had not gained ad mission to-the academy, and that he was to report to West Point. That is how the nation happened to enlist the military abilities of one of its fore, most leaders in World War II. By chance, General George Mar shall, then Army Chief of Staff, hap pened to hear Bradley deliver a lec ture on machine-gun tactics at Fort Benning shortly before World War II. Marshall told associates it was the best lecture of its kind he had ever heard. Therefore, Marshall and another rising general, Dwight D. Eisenhower, were very influential in Bradley's rise to fame. Bradley, how ever deserved and earned every pro motion he received. The nation is in debted to him for his long and bril liant service to his country. the Court House Ioor in Hertford, Perquimans County, N. C.,.. at 11:30 o clock A.
