Peanut Vote Is Important Saturday is the big day for peanut farmers in the 44 counties in eastern North Carolina, 'It's the date of the referendum to determine if peanut farmers will assess themselves a tok en payment, annually for three years, to provide funds for promoting inter est in all phases of peanut produc tion. " ' ''v: All farmers who grow one or more acres of peanuts are eligible to par ticipate in the referendum. - Each eligible voter is urged to cast his or, her vote in the referendum. The interest in the referendum and the vote recorded will reflect the gen eral attitude of peanut producers to ward sponsorship of a program aimed at advancement for a major crop. Interest in the referendum among producers in Perquimans County has been growing during the past month and The Weekly hopes each and every peanut farmer in the county will take time to cast his' vote oh the question during the referendum August 29. The Baseball Stretch The last month of baseball is rap idly approaching and the pennant races in the two Major Leagues will be decided within the next few weeks, the baseball fan will have to wait un til next April for his fare, and, in the meantime, he will See a lot of ice and snow, of cold weather. ;( - Baseball fans can glance back over the years and remember the high lights of major league competition during the off-season. There are cer tain penoQS wmcn siana out as eras oi noiaDie Daseoau events ana it- seems that we are about to witness one this season. Any older baseball fan will remem ber the reign of John McGraw and the Giants, or the successive cham pionship teams of Connie Mack, or the powerful .: Yankee teams , unaer Manager Joe McCarthy, not many years ago. Today fans are seeing an epic climax to another reign of base. .Hena Carolina ball domination that of Yankees unJ, at the of the holder der Casey Stengel. If the New, York Yankees of the American League. succeed in winning the pennant again this year they will have won it five times in a row. If they go on to take the World Series. they will have done something no oth er major league baseball team ever accomplished. In almost seventy-five years of baseball, such an event has not yet occurred. If it does this year, then 1953 will be a baseball year long re membered. Of course, the pennant races are seldom decided until; the stretch drives in September and that is what makes the competition so keen over so long a period. While, of course, we do not know who will emerge victorious in each league, we point out that in March of this year we tipped our readers off that it would probably be the Yankees, and Brooklyn in the National League. At this stage those guesses seenv to be standing up pretty well. . ELISHA A. PERRY Funeral services for Elisha A. Per ry were held at 11 A.
