FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1964. themselves wi'Jh. tie true facts involv ed in the iaraea of the day. Every dtixen should devote some time each day to an .honest search for the ac curate news. That news is not neces sarily found in editorials, editorial columns, or in the words of commen tators. , From these sources, one gets opinion, although quite of ten, news as well. ";r. ; .. ;..'. Therefore, every citizen of this com munity should make the effort to read some good books regularly, read the news columns, of the newspaper, and, occasionally, glance at an atlas or . . . u ,r . . . some map wmcn woum . acquaint nnn somewhat with the geography of the world. The search for the facts should not be confined to national or inter national issues, in which, much misin formation is usually involved. Progress Ahead Our congratulations to the Hertford Junior Chamber of Commerce for hav ing taken the initiative in the organi : zation of a committee to direct an industrial expansion program for Per quimans County. As we have proposed before we be lieve the formation of a well organiz ed committee, representative of all civic organizations of the community, is the stepping stone to future prog ress and we sincerely hope the tem porary committee named at a Jaycee meeting last week . wQl lead to the perfection of the over-all program. However, if the county is to have progress, the public, in general, must realize a program for industrial ex pansion is not a problem for this com mittee alone but one which must have the cooperation of everybody. Sitting around bemoaning the re . cent close-down of two industries in the community will lead us nowhere but active acceptance of the challenge offered through the action of the Hertford Junior Chamber of Com merce can lead to progress ahead. We pledge our wholehearted' sup port to this committee, and its pro gram. Do we hear the same pledge from others? Educational TV The Federal Communications Com mission wisely set aside a number of TV channels for educational purposes when channel allotments were made several years ago. Because education al TV stations have not been coming into operation rapidly there have been cries from some commercially-interested parties that there is no place or need for them in the American wav of life. Nothing is further from the truth. It is true that only three educational TV stations are on the air (Los An peles, Houston and East Lansing, j Michigan), but about twenty are ex pected to be operating by year's end. And one noted radio and TV critic predicts they will be a great success. I Jack Mabley. of the Chicago Daily I News, says: "Commercial television has become the nation's . . . salesman. Educational television will be the na tion's greatest teacher." There is no reason why that cannot be true. There is a need for educational non-commercial programs on TV. One would like to be able to see when he wirhes educational pro ' grams free from commercial propa ganda. These programs would include! concert music, educational courses in the various fields, vocational programs such as an agricultural lesson on fighting corn borers, sports events, ballet, Shakespeare, and demonstra tions showing how mechanical devices i work and are repaired, among other! things. They would be educational programs designed only to educate, and uplift the standards of knowledge and understanding among all citizens who wishes ' to take advantage of them. . Viewers would not have only this. They could choose between a sponsor ed prosrram and a strictly educational one. But we need both. And we are solidly opposed to the move to allot educational channels not being used to commercial use. In time, as the costs of operating TV stations come down, all the educational channels will be used, and it will provide Americans with a wonderful source of accurate, non-commercial information in their own homes free of charge, HOSTESS TO BRDX.3 CLUBt Mrs. W. Febl2,19,26Mar5,12,19 Your Duty As. A Citizen The editor feels it appropriate,' in these controversial times, to point out to readers that they have certain ob- ' ligations as citizens of the most pow erful country in the world, which must be'met if the electorate is to be able to act intelligently. One bt the first duties of every citizen is that he make an honest effort to be informed on the issues of the day. ; .. . This may sound trite, but keep in mind that knowledge is power and also that no citizen can act or talk Intelligently if he is hot acquainted with the events of the day. Also keep in mind , that misinformed citizens, who make both inaccurate and confus ing statements.' do nothing to lift the level of understanding and ' intelli gence in the comwranitv.
