itrf ; Leonidas t. tans, Heleue W." Nixon and Ruby A5 lfrhte represented the Perquimant-Catmly ASC at the State ASC Conference j held" in Agheville Thursday" and Hfday of last week. Some injtereting and enlightening talks were rejxfrted by the County representative f More than 400 com mitteemen and employees from 97 counties listened to discussions and talks by Horif ! Boss Rizley, Assistant Secretary of 'Agriculture and Dr. D. W. Colvard, siean of State College's School of Agriculture. Rizley and Col vard pointed out the seriousness of the "diverted acres" problem faced by North Carolina farmers. Rizley prom ised that " it decision, may be expect ed soon as to whether there will be limitations oh the as t that may be made of diverted acreswhether there will be cross-compliance in the 1955 program." As more and more acres are taken out of crop production, Col vard said, it may be necessary to "transfer a lot of people out of farm ing" or else accept the prospect of lower per capita farm income. The only alternative to these steps, he add ed, is for farmers of the State to in crease their volume of business and prone Dy producing greater crop yields per acre and er man. State Agriculture Commissioner L. Y. Ballentine told the conference that the big farm problem is to produce enough but not too much. He further stated that farm surpluses have re sulted from wider use of technology, mechanization, government prod Jin,' Ocean View, Va., and LIrs. They said that the funo tions of a price support program, are to bring supply in line with demand at reasonable prices, and to aid the farmer in getting a fair share of the national income. ss They said, "there are several rea sons which can be substantiated by fact and logic for supporting the price of farm products. It is just as im portant to consumers as to farmers that price of farm products be sup ported." They pointed out that price support might be considered as one way of insuring an abundant supply of food and fiber. The cost of price support programs today is cheap in surance for the public. Committee sessions and panel dis cussions on Agricultural Conservation Program, marketing quotas and acre age allotments, price supports and storage, and administration were at tended by delegates from the 97 conn tie.
