V - The United States Itinerary of the 1956 Maid of Cotton will carry King Cotton's young fashion emissary to major cities in every section of the country, the National Cotton Coun cil has announced, For the first time in the sixteen year history of the tour, the Maid 'will visit Pacific Northwestern states Included on the Maid's whirlwind schedule in the United States are: New York, Miami, Columbus (Ga.), Birmingham, New Orleans,' Houston,, Dallas, San Antonio, El Paso, Phoe nix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Spo kane, Seattle, 'a number of cities in the San Joaquin Valley of California, Des Moines, St Louis, Chicago, Phfla " delphia, Wilmington, Boston, Wash ington, Charlotte, Detroit, Nashville, Memphis, Dayton, and Cleveland. ? - ' Foreign Countries Several other additions probably will be made before the tour begins, the Council noted. Foreign countries to be visited by the 1955 Maid of Cot ton will be announced later.' The Council said that currently the nr. A crop of this size, if realized, would be the second smallest production since 1871 when growers harvested 3.669, 000 bushels. Due to smaller acreage, the 1951 crop was even below current prospects, as production totaled 3,478, 000 bushels; ; Continued dry weather before and during the maturing season 'has re sulted in lower yield expectations, and present prospects are for a yield of 90 bushels per acre compared with 105 last year.. , , . After the Maid is selected at Mem phis, Tenn., Jan. 4, she will begin her v tour with a month's preparatory per iod in New York. There she will be outfitted with a glamorous all-cotton wardrobe, representing the best in cot ton for 1955. There will be about 50 outfits for every occasion and every! season of the year m the Maid s fabu lous collection. ' She will wear these fashions every where to show cotton's leadership in the high-fashion world, and she will appear as featured model in all-cotton fashion shows at each stop. Constantly in Spotlight ' The Maid of Cotton also will serve as good will courier for the cotton in dustry. She will meet mayors, gov ernors, city and civic leaders through out the tour to present the industry's greetings. This is an increase of 25 per cent over the 1953 crop of 3,814, 000 bushels. A crop of 4,769,000 bush els would be the ; largest crop since 1951 when production totaled 6,098, 000 bushels. On the basis of reports made by growers to the North Carolina Crop Reporting Service,' the yield per acre is forecast at 16.5 bushels. . This ex ceeds, the 1953 average yield by two bushels and equals the record yields of 16.5 bushels set in 1951 and 19E2.
