Senate Seniority
v- Senator Alton A. Lennon today is
sued the following statement regard
ing seniority in the U. S. Senate:
"The purpose of this statement is
to clarify my position with respect to
my successor's seniority in the United
States Senate.
. iiu cuiiiiiuirwvo Bciiiuiiifjr van iivvr w
or could have been gained by Senator-1
Elect -W, Kerr. Scott by my resigna-,
tion from the United States Senate, t
"Mr. Scott cannot gain committee
seniority by appointment as the ear
liest Democrats who can be seated un
der existing regulations are Senators-
Elect O'Mahoney of Wyoming, and Bi
ble of Nevada. They will not take
their seats until around December 1.
My successor, Mr. Scott, will become
eligible to be seated after he is cer
tified under 1 North Carolina law on
November 23rd, putting him in the
Senate well ahead of any other newly
elected Democrat, thereby giving him
' seniority over them, which is the basis
for assignment to Senate Committees.
He will have seniority over the two
above-mentioned Senators as well as!
the following: Senators-Elect Newber- and Mrs. Willie Winslow and Ira
ger of Oregon; McNaroara of Michi
gan; Thurman of South Carolina; and
Barkley of Kentucky, all of whom .will
go in office in January.,
"Governor Scott will be eligible, ac
cording to North Carolina law, to take
his seat in the Senate on November
23rd, the date he is officially certified
as having been elected to the Senate
for the short term, and my tenure
of office will expire at the time he
presents his credentials which I hope
he will do immediately upon being cer
tified."
