spirits will be dampened to a large
measure by the occurrence of home
accidents or injuries.' A review of
information available to the North
Carolina State Board of Health in.

is celebrated within the home.
Sinc the home is so important in
the Celebration of the birth of
Christ, the home accident is one
of the major types of accidents
against which community action
must be directed.
How Serious Is The Problem?
iin 1954 during the month of De
cember, a total of 120 North Caro
linians lost their lives in home ac
cidents. Almost 40 per cent of
these deaths occurred during the
period immediately before Christ
mas until January. 1, 1955.

cident injuries were estimated at
over! 18,000 by the State Board of
Health's Accident Epidemiologist,
Dr. C.harle8 M. Cameron. At least
6,750: of these accidents happened
just before, during, or just after
the actual Christmas holiday.
It ;is' estimated that 480 North
Carojinans faced 1955 permanently
disabled as a result of home acci
dents which occurred last Decem
ber. . This . number exceeds the
number Vho were permanently dis
abled from poliomyelitis in North
Teachers College on. Saturday
night, December 10, at 8:15 o'clock
in the college auditorium.

The college anticipates the event
as one of the highlights in the his
tory of the lyceum series.
