Chance For Tax Hike ' It seems strange, but there is . today speculation about a pos sible tax increase, even though only a few months ago most of the tax speculation concerned a tax reduction. The changed prospect is a result of the chang ed defense and security pictures. Spending for defense next! ' year is certain to rise by scv-1 eral billion dollars. Some feel I defense spending should be in-' creased by, at least eight billion dollars in the coming fiscal year. While "t may not be in creased to such an extent, even an increase of four or five bil lions will be- felt in the U. S. economy. N.G Sunday School Lesson THE CHURCH IS - . diHSAionau v , International Sunday School Leuon for January 19, 1958. Memory Selection: "Be kind to another, tenderhearted, forgivr mg one another, as God in Christ forgave you.", Ephesians $;3 Lesson Text: Acjs 2:42-47; 1 Romans 15:1-9; Ephesians 4:17-32; v Philippians 1:3-11. ' '-' j This is the third lesson in a' se ries on the early Christian Churcli and the theme of the lesson is Christian fellowship. This fellow. ship is a three-way relationship between the person, God and his church. Man needs fellowship and the Christian togetherness that is so dear to those who be lieve and remain steadfast. In Romans, chapter 15, this is made quite clear: "May the God of steadfastness and encour agement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in ac cord with Christ Jesus, that to gether' with one voice you njay glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." -;. 1 The Christian faith is one of love for one's fellow man (fel lowship), love of God and love of the moving spirit that advances Jesus' teaching (the church). This brings up the old question, which has been asked by thinkers and non-thinkers for several centuries or more. This is the question of the church, and one's personal relig ion. There are those who believe that they need not belong to a church, or have a relationship with any church, to pursue their religion. They lose sight of the value and need for fellowship and forget that the fellowship of the early Christians was one of their main sources of strength and faith. . Today there is still perhaps more strongly than ever a long ing in man for having things in common, doing things together. When we mention having things in common we do not. refer jto the communist political systehi. In Acts, chapter 2, one might get that impression: "And all who believed were to-t getheV and had all things in com mon and , they sold their posses sion, and goods and distribuljejji them toi all, as any had need." , ; But these early Christians dp not have everything in commti; they owned their own homes and ate their meals in them.except upon occasion. They did unite in common prayers and their long ing for community was part ! $f their motivation for drawing to gether1., Crystalized by Jesus' teaching and leadership and their faith in God, their fellowship be came one of the greatest forces, the greatest force, in the history of civilization. The point is that they enjoyed fellowship and the community of Christ. They did not and could not isolate themselves and claim their religion! affected only God and themselves. No one of then could claim that his religion af fected only God and himself, fit was the church (fellowship arid faith), God and the , person- three-cornered proposition. K' And just as man cannot ignore his brothers, must love his bro thers, and demonstrate his lave for them in living a Christian life, day by day, to fulfill the hope'W Jesus, so did the early Christians feel and live that togetherness which bound together the Chris tian faith and life and still binds it. Likewise, as man cannot adopt the philosophy that his religion, is strictly a matter' between himself and God, he cannot adopt the phi losophy that his religion is be tween him and other men, and that the church has no place in it, that the church Is a man-made thing, which need not involve him. . v i;;-. . Jesus founded the church. The hurch'is the word of Jesus and oreaches his gospel. How can bile ignore the church, which is 4& Uir the, work of Jesus, and be fyithM to the mission of even Christian; to do all he can to fol low the example of Christ and 'ive according, to his teaching, "'Wch is what-he church stands For the' "church is the fellow ship of Christianity, the together ness that characterizes the very' beginnings of the Christian faith and the disciples' convictions and inspirations, and those ' of the early workers. We must Hve with and love our brothers if we are to follow Jesus' teaching and example. ' "mmm iaji ''Jam... ; li f DANGER iLIIEiiD J Beautiful, yes.
