the foul air in the jail, where he
was forced to eat, drink and
sleep in its close quarters, not
being allowed out, even . under

ht was almost poisoned. Later

George Durant and held a pris

A little over .one-half the farm
land in Perquimans County is
woodland. A 'lot of this wood'
land is not producing much re
turn. ; Hardwoods ire taking
over and crowding out the pines
in large areas of woodland.
Some of this is due to the, har
vesting practices used and lack
of proper woqdland management.
I( the undesirable hardwoods
were , removed . s o r killed aid
these areas restored to a stand
of pines the income per acre
over ajperiod of years would be
much greater. There are several
ways of getting tid of undesir
able or unmerchantable hard
woods. One is by girdling the
tree, v another is by chopping
cups or notches approximately 3
inches apart around the tree
and placing a tablespoon of ani
mate in each notch another
method is the use of 2,. 4, 5T (4
lbs. acid equivalent per gal.)
and a tree injector. Th"e 2, 4, 5T
is injected ; into the tree about
every 2 inches around its base.
The small hardwoods and brush
can . be destroyed by use of a
