Hertford Girl Scouts " are cele brating the week of March 12 as National Girl Scout Week with several activities. On Sunday, March 12, the Hertford Girl Scouts, a lone troop, attended Sunday School and church services in a body at Anderson's Methodist Church. They were accompanied by patrol leaders, Mesdames James E. Newby and. Bill Williams. Dur ing the service the troop was recognized by the Rev.' This is a matter that may be soon debated in the Senate. I should like to state the grounds upon - which I join with the President in opposing, parochial school aid. The ancestors of most Americans came . to this Scout promise. ! -On Monday "the Girl Scouts put on a display in the Paragon Beauty Shop Windows, some of the ' work .they have done in earning proficiency badges, as well as other materials related -to Girl Scout activities. , Each patrol will hold its reg ular! meeting during this week. On March 28 at 3:30 o'clock a Court of Awards will be held at the Hertford Grammar School to recognize the work done by the girls in the different patrols. ? The ; PTA of the Hertford Grammar School sponsors .! the Hertford Girl Scouts. At present there are three1 patrols with a membership of 13: Mary Lee Newby, Lou Vickers, Mary Bar bee, Beth Harris, Pat Long, Pam. Perry, Jo Frances Perry, Becky Lou Owens, Nita Nixon, Jan- White, Hollis , Williams, Bea Skipsey, and Brenda Thach. ; A new patrol is formed each ous freedom, which they clear ly believed embraced the right not to pay taxes for the. direct or indirect teaching of religious doctrines which they disbelieved, Statute Of Religious Freedom Their attitude was clearly re. fleeted in the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. That Statute declares "that to com pel a man to furnish contribu tions of money for the propa gation of opinions which he dis believes is sinful and tyrannical." Controversy The controversy over aid to parochial schools has been touched off by some Cath olic leaders who have called for the inclusion of parochial and private schools in ' any federal aid program for education. States ; declares that "Congress shall ' make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." The Su preme Court of the United States has this to say in the Everson Case; The 'establishment of religion' clause of the First Amendment means at least this: Neither a state nor the Federal Government can set up a church. Neither can pass , laws which aid one religion, aid all religions, or prefer one religion over another , . . No tax in any amount, large or small, can be levied to support any religious activities or institutions, What ever they may be called, . or whatever form they may adopt to teach or practice religion..." Unfortunate Issue The states have established public schools for the education of the children of parents of all faiths and sup port these schools by taxation. It is true, of course, that many parents for various reasons pre fer to send their children to pri vate schools or to schools op erated by various church bodies. The First Amendment prohibits the use of tax funds to support these church schools, regardless' of whether they are established) by Catholics, Presbyterians, Bap tists, Methodists, or persons of any other faith. It is unfortun-; ate Dhat this religious issue has. been injected into the debate! over aid to education.
