' . If you nave just eaten a bi? meal, you should be able to re strain yourself from the .urge to 1 swim, even if others do. Water is deceptively dangerous for hu- ' man beings. It appears so harm less few of us realize how quick ly we can drown in it. Panic in the water can cost ' you your life in less than five . minutes. Once , you begin t" swallow 'water your intake of -oxygen is cut off and you black out almost immediately. If you are suddenly thrown into the water with heavy clothes . and shoes on and you are not in the best of physical condition, : it takes only a minute to lose con- trol of the- situation and pay the penalty of life itself. ' The surprising thing to so land or piepanng to dispose of it practically all of th-3 time. . This land ' is sold by compe titive bid and this is well and good.; But when the land is turned over to. private auc tioneers the results are not al ways desirable. As a matter of policy, the federal, government should conduct its own sales so that the methods f olio wo i will be stiictly in t. line and standard operating procedure. In the first place, the people from whom the government 'bought the land have a first right to reacquire it. In the fcoond, if there is to be an auc-. Ixioa, it should be held by gov ' eminent, officials who can eith er accept sealed bids above a I vcrtain minimum or allow bid- ujig above a certain minimum. ve are discussing federal and sales as a matter of gen eral policy and no specific sale. I'hey should be ; handfed in a signified, unemotional and busi-ajas-hke manner. They are not vaudeville nor comedy but busi ness and the people's business and there is no justification for sales by any method other than ! government-handled sales, with : government representatives re sponsible for what goes on at the sales. ' - ( '", L. J In our endeavor to show l.w the New Testament fulfills and supersedes tfie Old Testament wisdom in relation to under standing life's ; 'meaning and man's purposes, the question be fore us for consideration today is: i How can we use the tongue as a powerful Christian witness? The purpose . of v this lessoa, therefore, is to help adults think of the tongue as an instrument for God which should be dis ciplined for advancing the cause it the gospel. , By common admission we ac knowledge that the tongue is capable of encouraging the good and abetting the evil. We know, ioo, that silence is not always golden; sometimes it betokens -owardice. " .' i Long ago, the tongue's imme diate influence Involved only handful of t people. Then it be came influential over many thousands as mechanical devices augmented the spoken word. With the advent of the elec-. tronic age, one .man's tonme can instantly bring his . convic tions and sentiments to the at tention of millions. ' In thei twinkling of an eye the tongue can arouse passions and harness them to grand or ignoble causes. The success of the Christian witness in the world, whether we like to admit it or not, is largely carried forward or im peded by the use we, as Chris tians, make of our tongues. ? (f The tongue is n inconspicu ous, yet very necessary aaiunc? to our physical makeup. Yet word fitly spoken may set life on its true course. horse's bit is the desire rider; behind the rudder is the intelligence of the ship's aavi gator; behind the spark that sets a forest ablaze is the care lessness of some camper; behind the tongue are the good or evil intentions of man. How neces sary it is, men, that these m-' tentions be in constant touch with the holy purposes of God. The tongue, i like . untamed beasts of the Jungle, is wild. Just when we believe we have it mastered, it breaks loose anil all our regrets and apologies cannot repair the ' damage it causes. ..The tongue is respon sive W ,.; our , dispositions;, . it Lshbuiour anger ,swheb we ier: harshness when .our inferiorities are exposed; it reveals our de ceit when our connivances are thwarted. The tongue cannot honorably serve two masters, mis u brought home to us when we reflect on James 3:9 "With it we bless the Lord and Fattier, and with it we curse men, Whe are made in the likeness of God." This verse summons the tongue to consistency. A rei deemed man will not rest con tent 1 so long as he lives in at unredeemed society where any of God's children are suffering deprivation. . ' .!r - I From its beginning the good news which Christ shared with the world has depended on the spoken word for its impact on the minds ana auaus or men. We must, then, as Christians, declare only that which can be confirmed in good. faith by the Scriptures. We will stake out our claims for men's hearts and minds only in the spirit of di vine love. We will ' make nt apology for the urgency of our witness, knowing that the pres ent moment is all we ever hav to work with, ' We will include all mankind in our appeal; we will use every available means oi communication. Including thr wonders of this .electronic agf, and we will encourage the free pulpit to declare the truth ' God fearlessly and without fav or, and we will give strength fo our words with fitting deeds In 'all human endeavors. - t . 1 The - early ' Christians me' every device at their commar 1 to spread the news that " was in Christ reconciling f world unto himself.
