Greenwood 4-H Club Has Meeting The Greenwood 4-H Club met at Mrs. Kenneth Bateman's. Fri day, October, 25 at 4:00 P. m The meeting was called to order by Elizabeth Ivey. Mrs. Powell Dies In Norfolk Hospital Mrs. Bernice Riddick Powell, sister-in-law of Mrs. J. Moody Matthews, Sr., of Hertford, died in a hospital at Norfolk, Va., last Friday after a short illness. The fescue grass is making good growth and looks as if . it will do a good job. on maintaining the side slopes of ditches. The residue on some of the corn fields looks good where the corn stalks were cut with a ro tary mower and where they were cut with stalk cutter and-disked lightly. C. Cotton Crop Prospects Latest U. S. Department of Agriculture estimates indicate a 1963 U. S. cotton crop of 14, 847,000 bales. This is 20,000 bales less than the 14,867,000 bales in 1962 but 13 per cent more than average. For the United States, a rec ord high yield per acre of 500 pounds is indicated. This com pares with 457 pounds last year and the previous high of 466 pounds in 1958. The 1957-61 average is 440 pounds. The forecast of 14,847.000 bales of 500 pounds gross weight in dicates ginnings for the season of 14,840,000 running bales and cottonseed production of 6,160,- nounce the rate which the cot-, ten crop will be supported next year. This year's base rate is 32.47 cents a pound. North Carolina's allotment will be 461,203 acres for 1964 as compared to 466,443 acres for 1963. Cotton Allotments 16 Millionjcres The Agriculture Department has announced that 1964 upland cotton acreage allotments will be 16 million acres, the minimum permitted by farm law and the same as the allotment for this year. .' .' .
