He - decided to write one,
with an assist from his wife,
a University of .Texas Eng
lish major.
For years the, McCallum
spent vacations and most
spare moments gathering in
formation for : the book.
Their home became the na
tion's clearing house " for
ideas and bits of informa
tion concerning barbed wire
and its impact on the history
of the United States. '
As the collection grew, so
did the information on bach
ed wire. Six years went by;
then the book was publish
ed. It is divided into three ma
jor parts. The first is the
story of those who invented
and manufactured ... barbed
wire. The second part tells
some of the stories of the
West where barbed wire was
not accepted without range
war, fence cutting and oth
er violence. A third section
contains ; descriptions , and
drawings of. 36 different
types of barbed wire for
those who would like to
build a collection of their
own.
