Dear Mrs. Transeau: ' Ti t
I want to send you per
sonal thanks for the help you
so generously gave to Project
Head Start this summer. I
am deeply grateful.
When we launched the pro
gram last spring, we knew
its success would largely de
pend on how well local peo
ple responded to the call for1
volunteers. We needed more
than teachers and doctors and
other professionals. We need
ed an army of what Presi
dent Johnson called "good
neighbors", people of all
walks and interests who
would lend their .' talents,
their warmth, their hands
and their hearts.
A great force did respond
500,000 strong and you can
be . proud to have been part
of it. Whatever success-we
have achieved is in large
measure due :to your dedica
tion,, your eagerness to con
tribute something of yourself
to poverty's most innocent
victims.
Head Start has been an
overwhelming success. - Withf
your help, more than half a
million children are facing r
brighter futures... And this
is why my thanks to you is
more than just a personal
expression. I speak also for
every child of your project
center, all the younesters you
reached and benefitted dur

EYES ON JESUS
Our story for this week is
in Matthew 14:22-32. Jesus
was walking on the sea. sThe
d i s c i p 1 e s were terrrfied;
thinking it , was a ghost.
"Be not afraid, it is I," cried
Jesus. Teter . called, "liord,
let. me come to Thee."
''Come," replied Jesus. Pet
er climbed out and began to
walk. The trough; wind J and
waves made ljim ,afraicv-and
he ' began to sink. "Lord,
save me!" cried Peter.. Je
sus took him by the hand
and said, "Why did you
doubt?" That's, the trduble
today. People won't believe
what the Bible says. They
are ready to make a fast
buck. . Money gets in their
way. They want to keep up
with the i Joneses. We are
putting our eyes on ma
terial things and not on Je
sus. : Some doubt that Jesus
will save us, but He said He '
would. : Some people ttrust .

4:1:5. v ,
As we study today's les
son we should become more
aware of the need for self
discipline in our striving to
wards the goals - of true
Christianity, and the per
sonal rewards we-gain from
practice of elf -discipline.
The Greeks were athletically-minded.
The y held
sports meets, wherein the
prize was a. wreath of laur
els that the victor wore on
his head; And, although
this wreath was perishable,
Greek youth disciplined
themselves rigidly , to be
able to run ' the race that
would bring them the . spoils
of 'victory. " " .,
So it is with life. If it
were not for each individual
disciplining his human de
sires, the prisons would be
full,-to .; overflowing,., for
where self-discipline leaves
off, disciplinary laws evolv

But punishment also comes
from within- and in? more
far-reaching sense. For if
wc fail to discipline our

Christ the Savior r-we risk
the losing of a crown much
