' : ,, " : . rV Mrs. Nathan Sawyer has ac cepted the chairmanship of the Perquimans County Chapter of the American Red Cross for the next year, so announced Bill Coakley of Norfolk, Area Field Director. In making the an nouncement, Mr. Coakley stated that Perquimans County was for tunate to have Mrs. Sawyer as the chapter's chairman since she has shown such a keen in terest In the work of the Red Cross and has already given un tlrely of her time in different projects. She worked this oast year as fund campaign chairman and was successful In raising $1,215.00 for the county. Mrs. Sawyer Is the former Ge neva Landing and Is the mother of four daughters. She Is a mem ber of the Methodist Church, The Wesleyan Service Guild of which she is treasurer and 2nd. Vice President of the American Legion Auxllllary. Mrs. Nathan sawyer, chairman of the Perquimans County Chap, ter of the American Red Cross, and Mrs. Marion Swindell, Ser vice to Military Families Chair man, attended an area Red Cross meeting at the Holiday inn In Elizabeth City on September 1. Miss Elizabeth Hobbs, who Is the Eastern Area Service to Military Families Chairman, spoke to the group about the work of and the problems Incurred by chapter chairmen of SMF. Intro duced by Bill Coakley of Nor. folk, the area field director, Miss Hobbs told of how much heavier the case loads are now and attributed these to the Viet nam War and the youthf ulness of the servicemen and their f ami. lies who are so abruptly trans planted from place to place. She offered several sug. gestions for the SMF chairmen for possible projects to aid the servicemen and their families, as well as suggesting different ways in which problems could be better handled. Marching Unit To Participate In Parade The Perquimans County Marching Unit will again take part In the Oyster Bowl Parade November II, 1967 as well as be on the field prior to game time at 12:30 p.m. The game this year will be Duke university versus u, s. Naval Academy at 1:30 p.m. The Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce again has 105 reserved seats for sale In a block for residents and friends of Perquimans County participants. All reservations must be in by October 20th, Come early and get choice seats. Let us again turn out and sup port our marching unit as well as Duke University, in addition to the Shrlner's Hospital for crippled children. Tickets are only $6.00 each. Sub-District MYF Holds Meeting At Cedar Grove The Chowan-Perquimans Sub- District MYF held its regular monthly meeting on Monday night, September 11, at Cedar Grove Methodist Church. Ap proximately thirty members at. tended. The plans for the new year, which were made by the sub District, Council, were dls cussed. The sub-District plans to give a fish fry supper October 27 at the Perquimans County High School luncheon. Tickets will be on sale In advance, and will cost $1.25 for adults and $.75 for children. The plate will Include fish, cornbread, cole slaw, potato salad, and a cup cake. It was also announced that the host church for each meeting would provide the refreshments and give the devotion. Karen Haskett, publicity chair man, was assigned to fix the programs for the coming year. This year, a prize will be given at the end of the year to the church with the greatest total attendance throughout the year. This Is sponsored by the Sub District Counselor, Mr. Curtis Eure. The program was given on re ports of summer activities and recreation. Reports were given on ACS, by Joan Yohn and Dar lene Vollmer, and on the Sub- District Workshop, by President J Sally Baker. Commissioners To Give Best Corn Yield Trophy For the fourth year, the of County Commissioners the best corn yield in Perquimans County. The first year, Ernest E. She was a member of irst Methodist Church where sne nad served as organist for many years before her retire, ment and was a member of the woman's society of Christian Service. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 o'clock in the First Methodist Church by the Rev. R. L. Bame, pastor. Owned by Ben Owens Boys age 8 through 13 In the Perquimans County area can be gin registering for the seventh annual Punt, Pass & Kick Com petition on Friday, September 1 with trophies and trips awarded football-minded youths for skills in punting, passing and place kicking. Headquarters lor registration in Perquimans County is Wins-low-Blanchard Motor Co. Inc., where entries wUl be accepted from September 1 through October 6th. Entrants must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There Is no charge as the entire competition is ab solutely free to all entrants and all equipment such as footballs and kicking tees are provided. No body contact is involved in PP&K competitions. When they register, boys re ceive a free booklet of com petition tips written by Green Bay's star passer, Bart Starr, the Baltimore Colts' punting specialist. Dave Lee, and Los Angeles Rams' place-kicking leader for 1966, Bruce Gossett. The booklet includes exercises for better physical fitness oriented to boysof PP&K's com petition ages. In addition to the booklet each registrant receives an attractive PP&K lapel pin. The basic principle of PP&K underlines fairness in competi tion to give every boy an equal chance to win, pitting contestants only against those their own age. Points are awarded for each foot of distance the ball travels on the fly, with points subtracted for each foot the ball lands to right or left of a center line. Eighteen handsome trophies will be awarded locally by Wlnslow-Blanchard Motor Co., Inc. to the top competitors. Gold trophies go to first place fin. lshers, silver to second and bronze to third, with first place dinners going on for further competition In Zone contests. Winners of Zone comeptltions will receive trophies and run ners up are awarded certificat es. Zone winners move to Dis trict competitions where 228 District champions will be awarded trophies and go on to compete for Area champion ships. Area champs travel to di vision events in NFL stadiums In San Francisco or Philadelphia where twelve finalists are chos en six from the NFL Eastern division and six from the NFL Western division. The twelve division winners go, with both parents, on a "Tour of Champions" to Washington, D, C., and then to the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, for the National Finals during the an nual NFL Play-Off Game. C. - A 64-year-old man was killed Sun day when he was struck by an automobile on U. S. Route 1S8 near the southern town limits. Edward M. Bryan of Ayden was struck on the highway's business route by a car driven by John H. Llghtfoot of Winfall, accoraing to b. t. gidds, Hert- iora cmei oi ponce. Hollo well Is Chosen For Publication The Board of Advisory Editors of Outstanding Civic Leaders of America announced today that Joel F. Hollowell, Jr. of Winfall, N. C. has been chosen for in. elusion in the 1967 edition of this national publication. Outstanding Civic Leaders of America Is an annual bio graphical compilation of approxl. mately 6,000 civic leaders from all parts of the nation. The men and women included were nomi nated earlier this year by local city officials, Chambers of Com. merce. and civic groups. "They have distinguished themselves In civic work to the point of being outstanding," said Doug Blankenshlp, Past U. S. Jay cee President and Chairman of the Board of Advisory Editors of Outstanding Civic Leaders of America, Mayor Jerome P. Cavanagh, President of the United States Conference of Mayors, has said that "The men and women listed In this book through their abili ties and services as civic lead. ers have earned the gratitude of all citizens . . . they have proved that America is confident of its ability to put aside doubt and take action." The publication, Outstanding Civic Leaders of America, was conceived by leaders of the na. tlon's civic organizations. Its purpose is to nationally recognize the men and women who give their time for com munity development and Inspire others to greater community service. The book Is 7 x 10 Inches In size and contains approximately 800 pages. It Is bound in a wine- cover with gold embossing. The 1967 edition is scheduled for publication in January of 1968. Marching Unit Of Perquimans Elects Officers The Perquimans County Marching Unit recently elected officers for the coming year. They are as follows: President, Linda Winslow; Vice President, Anna Chessonj Secretary -Treasurer, Linda Winslow; Scrapbook Chairman, Kay Dall; and Publicity Chairman, Karen Haskett. Our Unit has learned a lot of new routines for this year. Under the leadership of our chief, Linda Winslow, we hope to give a good performance. Most of our new routines were made up by the members themselves. We are also planning to use totem poles and teepees for some routines. This year the Unit is getting new winter uniforms. They are of royal blue vrlour, with gold fringe trim. They are expected to be ready by the first home game. The Marching Unit girls and leaders wish to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Keith Haskett, and the girls' mothers for the hard work on their uni forms. Another new addition is "war paint," actually theatrical grease paint, which will be worn for off parades. The warpaint is In our school colors of blue, gold and white. Our small Marching Unit is becoming famous. We have al ready been Invited to perform in The Oyster Bowl Parade and pre-game, and also to perform at the half-time of the "Band Day" at Carolina, which is at the Carolina - Wake Forest Game... The Marching Unit sincerely hopes that the townspeople will give their whole-hearted support this year. The Unit will try Its best to give a top-notch per formance. CircleMeet The Mildred Auman Circle of the Hertford WSCS met Tuesday morning at the home of Mrs. J. H. Towe, chairman, for the first meeting of the fiscal year, Mrs. Towe and Mrs, Minnie Wilma Hurdle gave the devotion al, after which officers for the year were elected. Much busi ness for the year was planned with enthusiasm, and special dates tor the. fall ' were announced, such as Prayer and Self Denial, October 16; Quiet Day, October 23; Bazaar; November IS, . Mrs. Lane has been Invited to display her "Granny Apple Dolls" at the Smithsonian Insti tute In Washington, D, C. The dolls will be part of a Crafts Exhibit showing American Handicraft, Mrs, Lane Is a member of the Albemarle Craftsman Guild. She has also participated In the Albe marle Craftsman Fair, Demon strating how to make apple dolls, Mrs. Lane calls the men dolls "Grandpa" and the lady dolls "Grandma". MISS FLEETWOOD WEDS LESLIE WINDER: The wedding of Miss Katherine Fleetwood of Hertford, to Lloyd Lester Winder, of Elizabeth City, was solemnized in a private cere mony, Thursday, August 31, 1939, at 4:30 o'clock at the home of the briae's sister, Mrs. C.R. Holmes and Mr. Holmes In Hert ford. DAWKINS-MORGAN - A wed ding of simplicity and beauty was solemnized on Tuesday afternoon, when Miss Carmen Hall Morgan became the bride of the Rev, Howard Dawklns, of Fayettevllle. The ceremony took place at the home of the bride's parepts with Dr. R. R. McCuUoch, of Clayton officiat ing, in the presence of the two families and a few close friends. Therefore, every doll has a unique expression. Mrs, Lane says that every doll she makes is special to her "fust like a person . . .no two are alike". Mrs, Lane owns and operates a roadside stand called "The Doll House" where she sells her dolls, other craft items and garden produce. She makes Ragedy Ann Doll character dolls and a variety of other types. The "Doll House" is located about 5 miles from Hertford on Highway 17 between Hertford and Edenton.
