Service For Beers Mark Wlnslow Beers, IS, died unexpectedly Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Albemarle Hospital. He was the son of John G. and Mrs. Betty Jean Wlnslow Beers. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Methodist Youth Fellowship, was a volun. teer worker at the Museum of the Albemarle where he acted as guide from 2 until 5 p.m. each sunoay anernoon, guiding visit. ors through, and was a tenth grade student at Perquimans County High School. Interns At Work In 21 Counties Teaching Interns from East Carolina University are now at work in school systems in more than one-fifth of North Caro lina's 100 counties. According to the records of pr. Thomas A. Chambliss. di rector of student-teaching, 157 interns have been assigned this fall to school systems In 21 counties of the state. , Nearly one-third of them. 82 are assigned to schools in Pitt County. Other counties have from 14 in Lenoir to one each in Carteret Chowan, Cumberland, Duplin, Greene, Guilford. Hert ford and Perquimans. Each intern is given a practice teaching assignment through the omce of Dr. Chambliss. They conduct regular classes under the direction of supervisors and get grades, tor on-the-job per formances. Last year's Junior Miss, Linda Christine Hand, from Gatesvllle, was third runner up in the State Pagent and won the most pagent awards of any single contestant. The contest, sponsored by the Hertford Junior Chamber of Commerce, will culminate Nov ember 25 when the winner Is chosen at the Perquimans County High School auditorium. Announcement of the contest, a highly popular activity last year, was made by Ed Nixon, chairman of the Jaycees Pageant committee. The local Junior Miss Title Is given to the high school senior between the ages of 16 and 19 who best typifies the ideal American teenager. Judging Includes per sonality, talent, scholastic achievement and personal ap perance. Any senior girl in the Albemarle area Is eligible. The girl chosen as the local Junior Miss will be presented a scholarship and the Junior Miss Trophy. She will also travel to Charlotte in February for the State finals. S. ARMY, VIETNAM ( AHTNC Army Private First Class George E. White, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs, Perry White, 315 Stokes Drive, Hertford, N.C., was assigned to the 9th Ar tillery in Vietnam, Sept. 26. Pvt. White, a wlreman in Bat tery B of the 9th Artillery's 7th Battalion, entered the Army in June 1965 and was last station ed In Germany. He Is a 1965 graduate of Per quimans County Union High School In Wlnfall. Before en tering the Army hewas employed by Radio Station WCDJ in Eden-ton. Perquimans FF A Team Winners In District Woodland Contest The Woodland Conservation Contest i for FFA students sponsored by the Albemarle Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors was held at Camp Cale In Perquimans county on October 12, 1967. Eleven schools from six counties participated in the contest, which consisted of proper tree planting, woodland protection, control of undesir able hardwoods, tree Identifies, tlon, wildlife food trees, proper thinning, age determination, tree volume and value, commercial wood products, and hardwood management. - "prizes for the contest were furnished by Union Bag Camp Paper Corporation. New Rector At Holy Trinity In Hertford Episcopalians of Hertford wel. corned this past week the Rev. Edwin T. Williams, their new Rector, and his family. The Rev. Mr. Williams has devoted the majority of his ministry (20 years to date) to the Mission and Small Town Churches of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Before his ordination in 1946 he was a salesman and then ac countant in the furniture busl ness. Born In Richmond, Vir ginia he attended the University of Richmond in Richmond and the School of Theology of. the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. He has served churches In Virginia, Kentucky and South Carolina, from which he came to Hertford. In his Church, he has been Department Chairman or Committee Member of Missions, Christian Education, Forward and Advance, Conference Cen ters, state of the Church, Chris tian Social Relations, College Work and Church Related Alcohol Problems. On the national level Ed has represented his Church on the National safety Council's Conference of Religious Leaders for Safety since 1958 and has been "Chaplain for the Day" of the United states senate and the United States House of Represen. tatlves. Among his outstanding com munity projects have been the organization of the Eastern Shore of Virginia Community Concert Association, the Brunswick Weekday Religious Education Program and the Memorial Hos. pltal Charity Fund. Currently he Is concerned with MentalHealth, Traffic Safety and Community Relations and Is a member of the Poetry societies of South Carolina and Virginia. The Rev. PTA Congress At Sunbury The North Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers will sponsor Its annual fall District Conference for District Four, teen at Sunbury Elementary School in Sunbury, N. Con Tues day, October 24th. Registration and a coffee will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the program at 10:00, ending with lunch. All PTA mem- bers, school principals, superln. tendents and other interested persons are invited to attend. The Sunbury Elementary PTA will be host for the meeting. Lunch will be available. District Fourteen includes the counties of Bertie, Camden; Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Martin, and Washington. The conference program will examine the "PTA's Stake In School Boards" and will seek to create a broader understanding of the role of school boards and their contribution to public edu. cation. Members of the Planning Board are Jack Kanoy, Ray Haskett, Buddy Tilley, Moody Matthews, and Charles Harrell. The purpose of Sulxlivision Regulations Is to establish pro cedures and standards for the regulation and control of the sub division of land within the Juris diction of The Town of Hertford, in order to promote the public health, safety, and general wel fare of the community. They are designed to promote the orderly layout and development of land; provide for the coordination and dedication of land for streets and public utilities; ensure adequate provision for transportation facilities, sewers, water supply, schools, parks, playgrounds and other public facilities, ensure the propler distribution of popu lation and traffic to avoid congestion and overcrowding; and Insure proper legal descrip tion, identification, monu mentation and recording of sub division properties. A public hearing was held Wednesday night on a Proposed Ordinance to be known as Subdivision Regu lations of The Town of Hertford, The Board voted to purchase a landscaper for use In the Street Department, at a cost of $400, It was also voted by the Board to donate $25.00 to Perquimans Union School to help defray ex penses for their "Homecoming event" to be held October 27.
