Reports from the Agricultural Extension and Welfare Depts, were heard. The Board approved a com prehensive Water and Sewer Study for Perquimans County submitted by the Perquimans County Planning Board, . Miss Thelma ElUott and Mrs. Ervln Turner were elected to serve on the County Library Board for a period of 6 years each. It was voted to amend the budget In the amount of $2500.00 to come from surplus funds, for payment of vehicle to be loaned to - the Perquimans County Rescue Squad. Members appointed to serve on the Perquimans County Plan ning Board were H, M. Thomp son for 4 years and Samuel Jennings for 8 years. ' During the afternoon ses sion Thomas D. Davis Retired From Highway; Brewer Named W.J. Davis-Weli known vet eran equipment employe of the State Highway Commission in Division One is stepping down effective January 1, 1969, and a long-time Commission me chanic C.L. " Dick" Brewerhas been named his successor. The personnel changes were announced today by Chief Engi neer Cameron W. Lee and High way Commissioner Don Matr thews of Hamilton. , W.J, (BilD Davis, who joined the Highway Commission in De cember of 1922 is retiring as Equipment Superintendent in Di vision One after serving in that capacity since 1939. Charles L. Brewer, current ly serving as Mechanic Fore man in the same division has been tapped to succeed Davis. Davis was born at Pendleton in Northampton County on Jan uary 19,1902, and joined the Commission as a machine operator-mechanic at the age of 20. This was in the formative stages of the Highway Com mission as we know it today. in 1926, uavis became Me chanic Foreman and was pro moted to Equipment Superin tendent, the position he cur rently holds. Charles L. Brewer, born in Perquimans County In 1925, joined the Commission in Sep tember of 1952 as an auto parts clerk. He became Auto Parts Supervisor for the division in 1959 and became a mechanic foreman in November of 1963. Both men are active In the church and civic areas of the community. , Albemarle Choral Society Presents Concert Sunday The Albemarle Choral Society will present its annual Christ mas Concert in Elizabeth City on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 4 p.m. at First Baptist Church and at the Edenton Baptist Church on Monday, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m. The chorus will perform selections 'from ' Handel's "Messiah" and two early Moravian Christmas anthems under the direction of Dr. Clifford Bair and accom panied by COA and ECU instru mentalists. H. E. Smith Dies At Belvidere Henry Edward Smith, 78, died Tuesday morning around 8:45 in his home following a long illness,' A native of Perquimans County, he was a son of the late Joseph A, and Mrs. Delia Bogue Smith. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ollle Cartwrlght Smith; a son, Carlton Smith of Hobbsvllle; a daughter, Miss Elnora Smith of Rt. 2 Belvidere and two grand children. The body w as removed to the Swindell Funeral Home pending completion of funeral arrange ments. If ew Vestrymen At Holy Trinity Commander Edward Griffin and Herbert Nixon were elected to the Vestry of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church; Hertford, to serve three year terms, at the Annual Meeting of the Congre gation on this past Sunday night They will be installed at the morning service on December eighth. Commander Griffin and Mr. Nixon succeed Charles Campen, Junior Warden and Charles Payne, Secretary. - - Ml Day Session Others officers appointed were Silas M. SSgf. Eure Is Selected Maintenance Man of Mo. SSgU Thomas H. Eure SSgt. Thomas H. Eure, son of Mrs. Hattle E. Eure and the late Mr. Eure, of Rt. 3, Hertford, serving with the U. S. Army and stationed at Felton, Delewaro, was recently honored by being selected Maintenance Man of the month. "As a team chief, he has earned the respect of all his subordinates and supervisors," Lt. Col. Wade N. Fowep, chief of maintenance said about SSgt Thomas H. Eure who was sel ected Maintenance N0O. of the Month for September. The 607th OrganizaHjW) Main -H- Both Also Face Break-In Charge A high speed chase Satur day night which originated in Hertford City limits when police officer W. F. Tarkington at tempted to make an arrest, ended one mile south of the "Y" intersection on US 17 and NC 37 after speed in excess of 100 miles per hour were re portedly recorded. Trooper Y. Z. Newberry, of Edenton joined the chase when William Bryan Cayton, 111, 28, of Elizabeth City, operating a 1958 Chevrolet owned by Charles Edward FaUln. 20. of Elizabeth City Rt. 5, left the Hertford city limits at' the ABC store and headed south on US 17. Both men are charged by Hertford police with breaking and entering Perquimans High School where three smoked ham, 10 pounds of ground beef, three or four cartons of drinks and several other items were reported missing. The city police also charged Cayton with reckless driving and falling to stop for a blue light The arrests were made Satur day around 11:30 p.m. following the chase by Trooper Newberry who charged Cayton with driving in excess of 100 miles per hour, reckless driving and no operator's license. FaUln, who was a passenger at the time of the arrest was charred with allowing an unlicensed operator to drive and aiding and abetting m operation or the car. Following the arrests while the men were be ins nlaced in jail Cayton broke from officers and ran and was not apprehend ed until Sunday around 6 D.m. when he turned himself over to! omcuus. j Both men are married and their trials have been set for Wednesday, Dec. 11 In Perqui mans district Court Cayton' s bond was set attain and Fallin'a at $300. TOO MANY SNAKES Haswell, Colo. - Killing 66 rattlesnakes within . 300 yards of one's home is a little awe some, George Bickel says the snakes crawled into abandoned prarie dog holes for the winter and he killed them when they crawled out to sun themselves. Two Charged In Perquimans Speeding Case v J tenance Squadron's maintenance man was selected by showing superior knowledge of the C -124 aircraft systems and preventing delays on aircraft by checking and rechecking the aircraft and correcting any defects. During the last six months Sergeant Eure has trained five 3-level airmen to 5-level status. According to Colonel Powell these airmen were upgraded in a minimum of time and all passed their SKT tests with grades in the high 90s. Swine Building Tour Scheduled There will be a Swine Building Tour ott Tuesday, De cember 10 leaving the Perqui mans County offices at 1:30 and returning around 3:30 p.m.," states R.M. Thompson, County Extension Chairman. There is a great deal of Interest in swine building In this area and there is a place for this type of operation on many farms. If you have any idea that you might be Interested In building or changing buildings for your hogs In the future, this will give you a real good opportunity to see some of the latest that have been built and are in use. "On this tour we will look at farrowing houses, feeding floors and feed mills with augers," further states Mr. Thompson, Mr. Jack Parker, Area Swine Specialist, will be along to dis cuss with you the advantages and dls -advantages of these opera tions and attempt to answer any questions that come up. Carmen Sutton On Tv Program Carmen Sutton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.W, Sutton of Route 3 Hertford, has recently appeared on the Betty Elliott TV Show .from WRAL - Raleigh, N.C. She presented her demonstration, "Carmens" Pride'' which involved correct procedures in making pumpkin marmalade and pumpkin con serve. Also, she appeared on "The Mildred Alexander Show" from WTAR-TV in Norfolk, Virginia. Once again she presented her demonstration on "Carmens' Pride". Carmen is the youngest member of the Albemarle Area Conserved Products Association and she has done outstanding work In food preservation. Carmen will leave Friday for Atlanta, Georgia to attend the 1968 National Junior Horticultural Association Convention as a Junior Leader. " Down To The Sea In Ships To Be Televised Dec. 11 National Broadcasting Com pany's Project XX new season opener, "Down to the Sea 'in Ships," will feature a segment on North Carolina's Cape Hat teras. The color documentary special, to be televised on Dec ember 11 at 10 p.m. "is the story of man on deep waters, a ground swell of nautical drama and ad venture, of maritime legend and mystery." NBC urges viewers to"travel to Cape Hatteras, graveyard of the Atlantic, for a look at the wreckage of ships whose names have long been forgotten in the sea that killed them." North Carolina's famedCape, along with the surrounding area, will be featured some seven minutes in the presentation. Housing Units The Hertford Housing Auth ority is proceeding with plans for additional housing units, ac cording to Henry C. Sullivan, Executive Director of the Auth ority. The Department of Hous ing and Urban Development has approved the additional units under their leased housing pro gram. HOUSING, INC. of Kinston, N. C. is to be the lessor and will build the new units to meet the approval of the Hertford Authority. They hold an option on property on Church Street in front of present Hertford Hous John Coston Is Featured In The Carolina Farmer PllSBBWPMSMSMSaSJSf i-i,- John Coston: Looking at proposed system expansions to meet area's future growth. John D. Coston, general man ager of Albemarle Electric Membership Corporation of Hertford, will be featured as personality of the month in the December issue of THE CAR OLINA FARMER. The magazine, which has ap proximately 200,000 subscrib ers across the state, will salute Coston in a "Profile" for his leadership in rural development and community activities. Albemarle &MC serves near ly 4,000 member-owners in sections of Camden. Chowan. Currituck, Pasquotank and Per quimans counties. Planned by ing Authority units, and this property is sufficient to build eighteen new units consisting of three, four, and five bedrooms. They also hold an option on property owned by E. Y. Berry and located on the Harvey Point Road at the intersection with Highway 17 by-pass. Plans for this site call for. twenty-four units, primarily for elderly and small families. The need for additional housing was determined by a survey made by the Housing As sistance office in the fall of 1966. Under present - day building manager of the electric co operative for 18 years, is cited in the story for his outstanding record in civic and community activities. The article says "his record shows that he has always worked for the good of the people in the area" and that "he has been a success." Coston has served on the Board of Directors of the Cham ber of Commerce, the Winfall Water Board, the Industrial De velopment Corporation and the Albemarle Area Development Association of which he was also vice-president. "While at Albemrale," the article says, "Coston has made the co-op a true community builder. In the nearby com munity of Winfalk . .the co-op encouraged and worked with the people to help develop a com munity water system. . .assisted In organizing and financing the Albemarle Area Development Association. . .helped launch and finance the Albemarle Planning Commission." Coston, a native of Hookerton, is married to the former Grace Mattock of Maysville. They attend the Hertford Methodist Church. Charles E. Peabody Dies From Injuries Charles Elliott Peabody, 46, of Rt. 4, Kernersville died Wed nesday, Nov. 6, from injuries received in an automobile. He was born in Smithton, Missouri and was a veteran of WorldWar n. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mozelle Smith Peabody, two sons, Howard and Wayne Pea body, both of the home, and one sister, Miss Margaret Peabody of Columbia, Missouri Funeral services were con ducted at Kernesville Wesley an Church November 8, at 4:00 p.m. by the Rev. L.L. Lange, the Rev. W.F. Pope and the Rev. R.S. Shelton. Burial was in Kernesville Memory Gar dens. American Legion , Auxiliary Heets . The American Legion Aux iliary will meet Thursday night at 8 o'clock at American Leg ion Hut t - Housing Group costs it is difficult for private enterprise to build structures to rent for amounts which low-income tenants can afford to pay. Rental rates will be based on the income of the occupants, and unit size will be deter mined by family status. The forty-two additional units will bring to a total of eighty six the number of units avail able for low-income families through the Hertford Housing Authority.. Ernest Stallings Dies Suddenly Ernest Cary Stallings, Sr., of Winfall, died suddenly Sat urday afternoon at 4:00 while hunting in Hurdle's Field be hind the Perquimans County Central Grammar School. A native of Perquimans County, he was a son of the late Robert L. and Mrs, Pattle Wood Stallings. He was em ployed as custodian for the Per quimans County Central Gram mar School for 13 years. He was a member of Mt. Smal Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs, Odel ' Stalling; his step mother, Mrs. Laura S. Stallings of Elizabeth City; two sons, Er nest C. Stallings, Jr. of Nor folk and Jerry W. Stallings of Waynesboro, Va.; asister, Mrs. Mable Copeland of Elizabeth City; four brothers, Robert S. Stallings and Timothy M. Stal lings of Hertford, Wilton C. Stallings of Portsmouth, va. and Roscoe C. Stallings of Eliz abeth City. Funeral services were held Monday at 2:00 in Mt. Sinai Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Dulin, pastor.; Burial as In Cedarwood Cemetery. "There's No Friend to Me Like Jesus" was sung by the Church Choir and "IWant Have to Cross Jordan Alone" was sung by Edward Jordan. They were accompanied by Mrs. .Preston Morgan, pianist. The casket pall was made of white chrysanthemums, red carnations and fern. Pallbearers were Lloyd Ray Morgan, Johnny Stallings, Har vey Stallings, Carl Godwin, Shelton Morgan and Tommy Mast on. Honorary pallbearers were Cliff Morgan and Raymond Stan ton. Maureen Nixon At National 4-H Club Maureen Nixon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ned Nixon of Route 2, Hertford, is presently In Chica go, Illinois at the National 4-H Club Congress. Maureen was named state winner In her Home Improvement long-time record book and she flew to Chicago to compete for National honors. She placed 6th Alternate at the National level. Maureen will re turn to Hertford on December 6 after a fun filled week In Chicago.
