Tanning Prizes end Money The nation has lndugled In a record bingo of consumer games In recent years and a recent In vestigation showed that often the consumer's chance of winning anything Is infinitesimal. Most of the games are conduct - ed by grocery store and filling station operators and some of them have offered consumers chances proprotlonate with ad vertising claims. But some of the claims have been far out of line with the facts-concerning chsnces of winning. i The Federal Trade Commis sion wants the seven major pro ducers of these games to agree to reasonable standards and the seven companies have agreed to cooperate. This attitude is In the public interest, since It has been revealed In recent investigations that winners have sometimes been selected In advance, that newl stores have sometimes been fav ored with a greater number of winners, etc The federal government has no authority totell retailers whether they can offer customers games or not, or even to tell producers how the games should be operat ed. But If fraudulent claims are made In advertising, the FTC has a legitimate concern. This prompted the recent Investigation and apparently good results. CUAUTT V-X oou.iJUs t -vica V HOW PERSONS REACT TO JESUS International Sunday School Lesson for January 19, 1969 MEMORY SELECTION: "The preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved It Is the power of God." 4.1 Corinthians 1:18). LESSON TEXT: MARK 2:1 to 3:6. The lesson we study today reveals Jesus continuing His ministry . . . healing and teaching. It also draws a sharply defined picture of how all sorts of people, from every walk of life, reacted to Him. It points up, with great clarity, that those with the right attitude in their relationship with Him were enriched by the contact, while those who had the same opportunities for contact and learning, but who did not avail themselves of their opportunities, left His presence virtually "empty-handed". Truly, what a man thinks of Jesus determines what he re ceives from Hlml If there is any doubt in our minds on this score, we have only to bring insight to bear on the events as related to our text for today. Jesus had already made His presence felt in Capernaum once before. Talk about this authoritative stranger had spread over the city, as a result of His first visit there, to teach and heal. Therefore, upon His second appearance, even greater crowds gathered . . . some came from curiosity . . . some came because of dire need, andapulsatingfaith that He could help either them or their loved ones, in their extremities of suffering." Such an one was the man suffering from palsy; such were the friends who carried him to where Christ was, and -undeterred by their inability to get their friend to Christ because of the press of the multitude around him they applied themselves to removing the roof of the house where Christ was, letting the man on his bed down through the aperture they had so laboriously brought about, so that he lay at Christ's feet. Jesus, as close sa He was to the inner workings of mankind did not fall to perceive the faith so unashamedly bared be-, fore the assembled multitude, and He responded to it, as those familiar with the Christlike nature had come to ex pect He cured the man of his sickness; He answered the naked longing in the eyes raised to His. He fulfilled the faith exhibited by the little band of devotedfriendswho had labored in the invalid's behalf! The power to forgive sin and to heal was in the person of Christ; it. was made available to all men through their faith, ssx indeed it itllLls today, . Whether or not we avail ourselves of the blessings that Christ brought to us so long ago, depends entirely on us. It depends on our response to Him. If we do not respond at all (or if we merely respond with criticism and suspicion, as did the scribes in the Temple) then we are - like the scribes - liable to be empty-handed. On the other hand, if we respond Joyously and sincerely, we will be enriched beyond measure, as the paralytic and his friends were en riched. Ws must put away from us all prejudices, all the critical attitudes that are so easily assumed, and we must not close our minds . . . either to Christ or to our fellow men. Jesus lived Joyously He lived a life of service; He was warm and human, He dispensed mercy and power. And while we cannot lay claim to His very special kind of power, we can (and should) strive to lay claim to Kls other attributes; we can be warm, and human: we can serve, and be merciful if we but trive hard onoushl We can respond that much! . If we will let ourselves become acutely aware of Jesus' presence In our innermost being, we will truly savor lift both In this world, and in ths next!
