Taking A Breather
Some of the current trends In
the treatment of tuberculoata
have not exactly caught the fancy
of the new medical director of
McCain Sanatorium, Dr, Wilbur
8telnlnger Joined theNorthCaro-
Una Sanatorium System staff last
June, and he is quick to adml
that one of the reason he wanted
to come to the Tar Heel State
was the approach that we have
toward the treatment of TB,
Dr. Stelnlnger, a victim of
tuberculosis himself In the
1940's, pulls no punches about
his stand on treating TB patientf
on an out-patient basis or ir
general hospitals at this time,
"There are trends in ottiei
states toward the treatment ol
TB which would allow people witt
a positive sputum, that is aottvi
TB, to go back Into the com
munity and come to a clinic once
or twice a week for treatment,"
he said. "That I Just cant gc
along with. I don't believe thai
anyone should be allowed tc
circulate in ahomeandnelghbor
hood situation when they couU
be spreading tuberculosis,"
Dr. Stelnlnger explains that he
Is opposed to discharging patients
from the sanatorium until they
have been shown to have three
negative sputum tests. This will
assure the Individual and his
family that when he returns home
he will not be carrying tubercu
losis to other people.
His thlnkingfits Into the pattern
followed in North Carolina. Our
sanatorium have a policy of
not discharging tuberculosis
patients until the medical staff Is
convinced that the patient Is no
longer an active case.
As for the treatment of
tuberculosis lngeneralhospltals,
Dr. W. H, Gentry, Medical Di
rector o! the State Sanatorium
System, has made himself under
stood on that question In the past.
He says that the general hospitals
are not equipped to handle the
hundreds of tuberculosis cases
reported in this state each year.
most of whom require three to
four months of hospitalization.
Nearly every general hospital
In North Carolina Is in need of
more space and additional staff.
What would happen If they had to
suddenly make room for the
hundreds of patients that are now
being treated for tuberculosis In
the sanatorlums 7
According to Doctors
Stelnlnger and Gentry, the treat
ment of tuberculosis on an out
patient basis Is fine, if the
patient's disease has first been
reduced to a negative state,
otherwise, they both warn, there
may be a danger of nsw and more
serious epidemics of tubercu
losis In the future.
