THE PROMISE OF RETURN International Sunday School Lesson for November 16, 1969 MEMORY SELECTIONS ''Therefore the redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zlonj and everlasting joy shall be upon their head; they shall obtain gladness and Joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away", (Isaiah 51:11) LESSON TEXT: Psalms 126; 137:1-6; Isaiah 40; 49; 51:1-16; Jeremiah 81. : ': V :'::r : e-re:..;.;:;' '.JK..'-,- ' If we are ever In doubt about the fruition of God's eternal purposes for mankind, then the lesson we are studying today should dispel those doubts. For we see the Jewish exiles finally realizing their dearest hope returning to their homeland. ,. ' With the death of Nebucbadneiiar, mighty Babylon began to decline in power, and Persia, wht had been steadily acquiring territorial rights, overcame the'Babylonlaas. And It was Cyrus of Persia who Issued the proclamation that gave the Jews permis sion to return to Palestine; God's chastisement of Judah had ac complished Its purpose; Judah had learned a hard and bitter lesson, and she was to be given another chance! ' ' , The hard core of the Judeans who had been spared to come through slavery were to bring to their people, sense of spiritual renewal, for, all during their captivity, they bad held fast to the tenets of their faith. Archives of their religious traditions bad been steadfastly preserved, and the Laws of Moses once again were ac corded tne nonor mat naa oeen intended in the beginning. v The suffering of Israel In bondage was a stimulant to their religious life they were forced to stand still and acknowledge feel ings of guilt about the way they bad flouted God's laws. With that facing of facts, they knew they had to atone for their sins before, God's promise of forgiveness and restoration ,to their land could Today God still chastises as a loving father. He sets before us the same lessons to be learned, holds forth with both bands His love and forgiveness. He strengthens our spirits and our faith in times of adversity, bringing us to a new awareness of His presence in our lives. There is no doubt that many among the exiled experienced moments of misgivings and doubts, for their punishment was long and severe. Today we, too, experience discouragement and doubt when we are being sorely tried. We must be ever mindful, however, of God's promise to people everywhere the promise of forgiveness and great Joy if we will but genuinely repent our sins and weak nesses and gain strength In Him. For throughout the history of the wnrlrl - frnm tha rtswn of ''the craoiifln. God has alwavs keot His promises, even though mankind has often failed to keep faith wiU ' No situation is so hopeless that we cannot, with God's halp overcome it. His strength is our strength, and It Is a nver-f all j ing source. He never closes one door' on us that he does not oper others to even greater opportunities we must learn patience and humility and trust, while we wait for His ways to be revealel This was the way It was with Israel; this Is the way it Is to." y, (These comments are based on outlines of the Internatloci Sunday School Lessons, copyrighted by the International CounU of Religious Education, and used by permission. ' And, if nobody offered to tako me, I'd walk myself to Sunday School. ' But, as thirfgs are, I've no mors say about my destiny than a mis silo has. You grown-ups decide how high or how low my life shall bo aimed! And when to launch mel And where! - ' And, from what I hear, some of vs never get off Se ground. Pleas . . .
