Tricentennial Talk Last week's Tricentennial Talk column was minus the heading because it was more of a news item featuring the initial look at our tentative schedule. Right now we're in the process of having programs being printed up so that schedules will be available to one and all. Hey! Hats are in! And they're ,vanable at price most reasonable) at most of the stores in the county. Hats? Old-timey and just right for getting you in the mood to help celebrate birth day number 300. They'll fit most any size head and they're fun to wear. We have them in two styles one is a three-cornered hat and the other is a derby. Pick up one - or a dozen. History books are being printed too and they'll be available the week of the celebration. n Our Chamber President Joe Nowell - plus his beard - will be the big guest star on the Friday, October 9 edition of "The Mildred Alexander Show." It's seen, as about everyone knows, at I p.m. on channel 3. Joe will bring along some dolls dressed up in old-fashioned clothes. He'll also have some color slides featuring interesting Perquimans County people and things. We've been getting a fair number of inquiries from out-of-town - places like Virginia, Pennsylvania and Ohio - from people who are interested in the centennial, some of whom may be down here for a part of the celebration. With interest like that, plus the continued growing interest by local citizens, it's a cinch to prophesy that the centennial week should be a good one. Enjoy it! . SPECTATOR By COLLEEN FERRY Editor of Per-Co-m Tattler The beginning of school on September 8 for approximately f725 students at PCHS was unlike any before it. This was because of the consolidation of Perquimans - County Union School and Perquimans County High School at PCHS. Anyone visiting PCHS from previous graduating classes might easily get lost as did many students on the first day of school. A new building has been constructed on the northern side of the lawn in front of the school which houses a new library, 3 classrooms and two restrooms. Students studying here have the added comfort of air con ditioning. The old library was converted into one large classroom, a guidance counselor office and an extension to Mr. Byrum's office, this summer. A long, covered walkway leads from the main campus building to the King Street extension. PCHS has more to offer students than ever before. New courses such as Family Living, Mechanical Drawing and General Construction are offered to students here. Consolidation also had its effect on the extra auricular activities. The traditional Perquimans Indians are now the Perquimans Pirates and bear the colors: black and gold. The new football season for PCHS began with a home game against Knapp, September 4." Although defeated the Pirates made up for the loss on September 11 as they pushed over the Northampton Rams in a score of 144. Quar terback Gary' Rouse scored the first touchdown., Again the Pirates fought hard but were held back on September 18 as Ahoskie went ahead for the leading score. With 2 defeats and one win the Pirates have hopes of turning out more successful games. . September 25, the Pirates will stage a home game against Fredrick Military Academy. The public is heartily welcome to come out and watch the Pirates battle. The fountain of Jet d'Eau, do La Rade, Geneva, Switzerland, reaches a height of 426 feet.
