Halsey and Mrs. Elizabeth S. Jethro were among those honored at the Century Farm Families luncheon held at the N. C. State Fair. Its purpose was to honor families that have owned the same land for 100 years or more. When officials first discussed the idea of the project some months prior to the Fair, they anticipated a limited response -however over 800 families replied and more than 500 at tended the luncheon. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. Donald Madre. "How The Day Is Over" was sung. Mrs. Batten gave the devotional taken from Psalms V. She led in prayer. Mrs. Pat Harrell gave an in teresting talk on Cancer. She urged each person to have a check-up. She also gave out literature. Several said they would help in the Cancer drive. The-president then conducted the business meeting. She read a letterof-thanks from Mrs. Paige Underwood thanking each person that had a part in the Craftsman's Fair. She also announced Council October 30. A tea would be given for Mrs. Ila Grey White. And also she an nounced the 50th anniversary of Clubs to be held in Raleigh Oc tober 27th. Christmas Open House was discussed. Score sheets were turned in. The collect was repeated for closing. Denning, North Carolina's Civil Defense Director, announces that the State is one of only four in the Nation selected by the National Office of Civil Defense to par ticipate in a test program for ! posting signs at fallout shelters. Under the program, loca. governments will be paid b Federal Civil Defense funds ai the rate of Twenty Dollars pei facility for marking shelters within their jurisdiction. No total is determined at this time but the amount of funds will be sub stantial with 59 counties and municipalities therein realizing funds in varying degrees. Denning said, "We are delighted that our State was chosen for a program that will be beneficial to many of our counties, cities and towns." Bazaar At Meth. Church Nov. 11 Members of the Women's Society of Christian Service and the Wesleyan Service Guild will hold its annual Bazaar on Wednesday, November 11, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the educational building of the church. For the past several weeks many of the ladies have been sewing, painting, and creating lovely things to be on sale at the booths. Home made candies, preserves, pickles, and baked goodies will satisfy your sweet tooth. You will want to see the lovely Christmas decorations and gifts on display for early shoppers. The Bazaar would not be complete without the chicken salad luncheon which will be served in the Fellowship Hall from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Tickets may be secured from any member of the WSCS or Guild. The Rev. Norman B. Harris officiated. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Parker Chesson of Hertford. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed ward Lee Hurdle, Jr. of Belvidere. Prenuptial music was presented by Mrs. Hollis Williams, soloist, and Mrs. Chester Winslow, organist. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a formal gown of imported sata peau over bridal taffeta fashioned with an empire waistline and a-line skirt. The bodice was accented with alencon lace at the neckline and at the empire waistline. The long bishop sleeves featured wide cuffs of lace. Her imported silk illusion mantilla, edged with matching alencon lace, extended into a chapel length train. She carried a nosegay of white roses, stephanosis and sweet roses. Miss Deborah Davis, sister of Student Enrolled In Miss Susan Harrell of Hertford is one of the 91 students who are enrolled in the Honors Program of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A sophomore English major, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. CM. Harrell Jr. of 109 N. Railroad St., Hertford. Students in the Honors Program take special courses of study, under the direction of members of the UNC -G faculty, in addition to work related to their degree requirements. Superior academic achievement is a prerequisite. Available to sophomores are tutorials, seminars or in dependent study. Juniors in the program participate in a special seminar, featuring broad topics of interest to students from various disciplines. Seniors may select an independent study program or a seminar, or write an honor thesis. A selected number of freshmen students are invited to enroll in a special tutorial course for one hour of credit in the spring semester, under the program. The Honors Program studies provide one hour credit each semester for sophomores and three hours each semester for juniors and seniors. the groom, was matron of honor. Mrs. Joe Tunnell and Mrs. Richard Bryant served as mistresses of ceremony. The bride's mother wore an aqua silk and wool shantung dress with matching accessories and a pink cymbidium corsage. The groom's mother wore a rose knit dress with matching accessories and a pink cym bidium corsage. For a wedding trip to Williamsburg the bride changed into a brown knit ensemble with matching accessories and a corsage of Stephanosis and roses. Honors Program Bridge Club Meets mra. uiaries Whedbee was hostess to her bridge club Tuesday night at her home on Church Street. Those playing included Mrs. V. N. Darden, Mrs. Montfort Haslam, Mrs. T. P. Brinn, Mra. W. G. Wright, Mra. S. M. Whedbee, Mrs. Sandy Sisco, Mrs. C. E. Johnson, and Miss Thelma Elliott. Mra. Whedbee won the high score prize. A sweet course was served. ) I Talented Students Accept Invitations To ECU Weekend More than 100 gifted students from high school! in North Carolina and neighboring states have accepted invitation! to participate In Bait Carolina University'! "Scholarship Weekend" Nov. 7-9. More ac ceptances are expected. At latest count, 107 high school seniors all of them National Merit lemlflnallsti - had ac cepted invitations extended by ECU through high school prin cipals and ECU alumni In their respective communities. These young men and women will come to the Greenville campus for a program which includes meeting! with faculty member!, visits to classes, demonstration! and exhibit! of science facilities, the computer center, language laboratory and fine art! studios, They will be guests at a banquet, given tours of the campus, attend pop and jazx concerts and the ECU-West Virginia football game. From the group invited to attend a limited number will be chosen to return later to be in terviewed for ECU academic scholarships presently valued at $1,000 a year for four years of study. UMYF Of First Methodist Church Work For Cancer The Junior Hi UMYF will be selling balloons for the Cancer Drive on Friday afternoon from 3 p.m. to 5; and also during the football game that evening at Memorial Field.
