The two events highlighted the annual meeting of district members held Sunday in Hertford. V Naming of the Young Career : Woman and election of a new .district director highlighted the annua V meeting of the District Ten Business and Professional Women's Clubs held here Sunday with more than 100 members ' from the eight district clubs attending. Miss Barbara Dixon of Ahoskie was named district director and Miss Sherron Deal of Mac clesfield was selected Young Career Woman to represent the district in state competition in Wilmington. During the meeting conducted by Mrs. Walter Humphlett, Jr., president of the Hertford Club, a memorial service was held for Mrs. Josie Thorson who was president of the Elizabeth City BPW Club at the time of her death. Also assisting, with this phase of the meeting were Miss Thelma Elliott of Hertford, Mrs. Katherine Miller of Tarboro., Mrs. Julia Hassell of Edenton and Mrs. Viola Jones of Elizabeth City. The candidate for "Mayor" in addition to being a member of the Hertford Town Board, is past president of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce. The Ruby Blythe Silver Bowl and the Nike Award were both presented to the Hertford Club and Mrs. Florence Franks of Roanoke Rapids was presented an award for the best civic participation program in the district. He is owner operator of the One Stop where he has been associated for a number of years, and for the past twenty years has been sole owner of the establishment. Two new candidates tossed their hats into the political ring for a seat on the Hertford Board, they are Willie F. Ainsley and Herbert N. Nixon. v It is rumored here that several women are giving deep thought to filing for a seat. . ON MIDDLE EAST President Nixon has termed the conflict in the Middle East the most dangerous in the world saying Soviet attempta to dominate the area "must and will be resisted." In his recent "State of the World" message to Congress, Nixon put the Soviet Union on notice that "despite Americt's unhappy involvement in Southeast Asia, the United States waa not re linquishing Its role of world leadership, Elijah White, Former Mayor Of Winfall Files For Office Elijah (Toss) White, former Mayor of Winfall who has held office for the past 16 to 18 years. and who on December 14. 1970 tendered his resignation, has filed for the office of Mayor in the upcoming May 4th election in the Town of Winfall. When Mayor Elijah White resigned the office in December, Joel Hollowell. Jr. was sworn in to serve the unexpired term. West Ainsley. 100 years of Fire Fighting Apparatus, by De Costs was given to the library in honor of Charles T. Attends Seminar Approximately 50 public school superintendents and program directors were at East Carolina University Saturday for an all-day seminar, co-sponsored by the ECU School of Education and the ECU Division of Con tinuing Education. Funeral Services Conducted For Mrs. Winslow Mrs. Bonnie Joyce Miller Winslow. 46. of Route 2. Hert ford, died Saturday night at 6: 40 at her home. A native of Benton Harbor, Michigan, she was the daughter of Carl Miller of Burlington and the late Mrs. Elsie Lingham Miller. Besides her father, she survived by her husband. Obed Thomas Winslow; two sons and two daughters. A funeral service was held Tuesday at 2:00 in the Chapel of the Swindell Funeral Home by the Rev. Irvin Baccus and Daniel Forbes. "When He Reached Down His Hand For Me" was sung by Mrs Joe Dickens and Henry Copeland. "Just A Closer Walk With Thee" was sung by Mrs Jean Meads, Mrs. Margaret Sawyer and Mrs. Edna Earle Meads. Mrs. Edna Earle Meads served as organist for the ser vice. The casket pall was made of yellow roses, yellow pom poms white chrysanthemums, baby's breath and fern. Pallbearers were Alphonso Chappell, Samuel Baum Thomas Baum, Herbert Mo Pherson, John Newby Winslow and Harold Cutler. Burial was in Upriver Cemetery. Hearing Set For March 26 On S.S. Tax The Perquimans County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Friday, March 26th at 7:30 p.m. in the Perquimans County Courthouse to consider the levy of a one per cent local government sales tax All interested citizens have the right to be heard and are invited to attend and present their views to the Board of Commissioners as to whether the proposed tax is wise or unwise; whether the tax should or should not be levied; whether local conditions requre the imposition of the tax; other means of taxation available to the country and municipalities within the county would be more equitable; or any other reaons for or against the levy of a one per cent local government sales tax as an added source of revenue for Perquimans County andthecities and towns within the! county. Perquimans is one of the twenty five counties in the state which had approved the 1 per cent local sales tax by referendum, only to have it declared unconstitutional by the State Supreme Court last January 20. To Observe Youth Sunday The First United Methodist Church in Hertford will observe Youth Sunday on March 28. At this time the youth will be in charge of teaching Sunday School classes and conducting the morning worship service. Speakers during the morning worship will be Brant Murray, Dee Boyce and Charlie Harrell. Nancy Tunnell will be the leader for the service with Jenny White reading the scripture and prayer and Patti Landing bading the responsive reading. Ushers will be Tony Winslow, Tony Lane, Brad Fields, Roger White and Jeff Haskett. The CALIFORNIA CUTIES will play the Gary Stubbins All Stars basketball team Fri., April 2 at Perquimans High School with game time set for 8:00 p.m. The CUTIES are a fun-loving bunch of wanderers performing on the basketball court for the 7th straight season. However, the original club was a men's softball squad that traveled the width and breadth of the country attired in ladies garments, facing topnotch men's clubs in all parts of the country. In fact, the softball replica made a trip to Japan as guests of the State Department several years ago and fans flocked to the parks to watch them in action. She stands 6 feet, 7 inches in her stocking feet and Open House Hospital Slated Mar. 28th ;i i ' h L i 'J r.;- -jj - Open House will be held on Sunday March 28th at the new Veterinary Hospital from 2:00 until 4:00p.m., it Is announced by Dr. Lester A. Dees, D.V.M. of Edenton. The new hospital is located on the Edenton-Hertford Highway, it has a reception room, examining room, X ray room, operating room, recovery room and a large kennel. Dr. Dees is shown standing in front of the new Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Dees is assisted by his wife Mrs. Peggy Dees who formally worked at the Chowan Hospital. Beta Members Attend Convention The members of the Beta Club of the Perquimans High School and their sponsor, Miss Hoffler, recently attended the North eastern District Beta Convention whirh was held at the Bertie Senior High School. Windsor. N.C. - Darlene Williams and Linda Evans were nominees for president and secretary, respectively, for the 1971-72 District Beta Club offices. Although Darlene, a runner-up, lost to Stick Of the Manteo Hiah School. Manteo. N.C. Linda was elected to the position she sought.
