Yeates Joseph Dewey Yeates, 72, of Route 3, Hertford, died Wed nesday at 10:25 a.m. in the Albemarle Hospital following a long illness. A native of Webster s County, Miss., he was the son of xMrs.'Lura Beatrice Crow Yeates and the late Joseph Elijah Yeates and the husband of Mrs. Lillie Mae Smith Yeates. He was a member of the Berea Church of Christ and was retired from the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alleene Y. Thompson of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Mollie Lu Forehand of Hampton, Va. ; a sister, Mrs. Mammie Lee McBee of Mathiston, Miss.; three brothers, Robert W. Yeates of Shrewsbury, Mass., James M. Yeates of Tallulah, Louisiana and W. Mancil Yeates of Ruleville, Miss.; four grand children. A funeral service was held Friday at 2:00 in the Berea Church of Christ by the Rev. Thomas Biggs, pastor, and Dr. R.W. Kicklighter, pastor of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church in Elizabeth City. Mrs. Carolyn Wells Dies Suddenly In Chowan Hospital Mrs. Carolyn Riddick Wells, 54, of Edenton, died Tuesday morning in the Chowan Hospital. A native of Gatesville, she was the daughter of Mrs. Dora 1 Riddick of Hertford and the late Rufus M. Riddick, Jr. and the wife of E.L. Wells. She was a member of the Edenton United Methodist Church. - ' ' ! Besides her husband ' and mother. She is survived by a son, Charles Baker of New Castle, Delaware; two brothers, R. Marion Riddick, 3rd. of Hertford and C. Robert Riddick of St. Joseph, Michigan; a sister, Mrs. John Lewis Perry of Windsor; and one grandchild. The body was removed to Williford Funeral Home in Edenton pending completion of funeral arrangements. Landing Seeking Re-Election To Office Of Mayor Of Hertford Emmett Landing, Mayor of the Town of Hertford has filed his candidacy for re-election in the May 4th Town Election. Landing, has served one term as Mayor, he was elected in May of 1967 when he defeated his opponent John Beers. Mayor Landing will have opposition again this election, W. D. ( Bill) Cox, a Town of Hertford Commissioner just completing his first term, filed his candidacy for the office of Mayor last Monday. Seeking the two available commissioners seats will bt incumbent Jesse L. Harris who is seeking re-election, and two new candidates Herbert N. Nixon anc Willie F. Ainsley. The other two seats on th council, not to be voted on at this time are occupied by Cecil C Winslow and John Beers. In the 1967 Town Election, W.D. (Bill) Cox and Jesse Harris, seeking a seat with the commissioners, polled the highest vote in the election. Cox, received 493 of the 596 votes cast Judge Horner Presides At Perquimans District Court Judge Fentress Horner presided at the regular session of Perquimans County District Court Wednesday and disposed of the following cases: Bobby Ray Clifton, charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating liquors and driving without a valid operator's license, was given a 90 day sentence, which was suspended upon payment of a fine of $125.00 and costs and ordered not to operate a motor vehicle for a period of 12 months; Fred Douglas Colson, charged with violating his restricted driving privilege, received a fine of $200.00 and costs and ordered to surrender his restricted license!) appeal was noted in the case and Bond was set at $300.00; Celon Cahoon, charged with misdemeanor of larceny, was given an 18 months sentence. Elvin Hughes Piner, charged with driving under the influence of intoxicating liquors received a fine of $100.00 and costs and given a restricted permit to drive from home to New York and New York and home; Joseph Paul Lancaster, charged with 2 cases which were consolidated for judgment included charges of 1. public drunkeness, 2. Allowing Bobby Ray Clifton to operate vehicle in his possession while under the Influence of intoxicating liquor, 3. allowing an unlicensed driver to drive, 4. resist delay and obstruction and hinder officer in performance of duty, received a 6 months sentence. Motts invites the! public to attend the se vices Perquimans FFA Team First In Land Judging March 25th r The FFA Land Judging Team from Perquimans High School took first place honors at the meet held March 25th in Perquimans County sponsored by the FFA Chapters of the five counties participating and the Albemarle Soil and Water District. The winning team will go to Southern Nash High School, Bailey, N.C, for the State con test this Saturday, April 3rd, accompanied by their instructor, J. L. Tunnell. Mr. Lloyd Bunch, Chairman of the Albemarle Soil and Water District, is shown presenting a services Held For Mrs. Morgan Mrs. Gabriella Parrish Moore Morgan, 99, of 216 N. Church St., died Thursday morning at 12:30 in the Chowan Hospital following a long illness. A native of Chowan County, she was the widow of Wallace Milton Morgan and the daughter of John Duncan and Mrs. Virginia Byrum Parrish. She was a member of the Hertford Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. B.C. Perry and Miss Helen Morgan of Hertford; a sister, Mrs. Betty Jackson of Norfolk, Va.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 in the Chapel of the Swindell Funeral Home by the Rev. Norman Harris, pastor of the Hertford Baptist Church and the Rev. R.L. Bame, pastor of St. James Methodist Church in Tarboro. "In The Garden" was sung by the Church Choir and "The Lord's Prayer" was sung by the Rev. Harris. They were ac companied by Mrs. Chester Winslow, organist. Linda Evans Seeks State Post Linda Evans, a rising senior, is a me'mber of the Beta Club of Perquimans High School. She has ac cepted nomination for secretary of the State Beta Club. - The honor student is ex ceptionally inspired by her recent winning the title -as secretary of the District Beta Club. The candidate, under her campaign manager, Jann Dillon, has fearlessly entered the state-wide race on her chosen theme: "Happiness Is. . " Linda Is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. J. L. Of Historical Membership Campaign Mrs. Julian E. Winslow of Hertford has been named chairman for Perquimans County for the 1971 Roanoke Island Historical Association Membership Campaign. Mrs. Winslow's appointment was announced by Mrs. Hargrove Bowles Jr. who is General Membership Chairman for the annual drive. The Roanoke Island Historical Association is the producer of The Lost Colony which is presented each summer in the company's Waterside Theatre, located at the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks area of North Carolina. Memberships available in the Association are: Regular $5.00, Sustaining $10.00, Sponsoring $25.00, Patron $50.00. These entitle the 1971 Member to one reserved seat ticket for each $5.00 value of the membership and a copy of the Lost Colony Souvenir Program. Life Memberships are available at $100 and each receives a lifetime pass to the production; Donor Members at $250 receive two lifetime passes; Benefactor Members at $500 receive two lifetime passes and their names are inscribed on the ??nefactors' Panel in the Lost Colony Building at Fort Raleigh. These members receive the Souvenir Program for life. All memberships in the Association are tax deductible as contributions. Members are invited to attend the annual luncheon and Association meeting held in December as part of North Carolina's Culture Week activities. Superior Court Scheduled To Convene On April 12th A criminal court will convene in Perquimans, Monday, April 12th with the Hon. Judge Elbert S. Peel Jr., presiding. The Criminal Court Docket consists of the following thirteen cases: Jerry Hillard Jr., is scheduled for a Post conviction hearing. Hillard was tried and sentenced in the robbery of the Hertford Colonial Store located at Harris Shopping Center. Other cases include: two cases of Firelighting Deer. Gilbert Scott and William H. King Jr., represented by John F. White, attorney, are to be tried for Firelighting Deer. James Armstead Pugh Jr.', charged with DWLS; Ellis Garrett, charged with DWLS; 1 1 A :. ' . Guard, instructor; Camden High School, O.J. Gaylor, VOAg Teacher, and Edenton High School, Eugene Rascoe, Vo-Ag Instructor. Mr. Tunnell poined out that instruction in Vocational Agriculture and the Land Judging Meet provide op portunities for students to develop appreciations, un derstanding, and abilities with respect to: (1) classifying soil according to its physical characteristics, and (2) using and managing soil according to its capabilities. Mrs. Winslow also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Island Historical Association. The 1971 season for The Lost Colony will open on Wednesday, June 23 and will continue through Saturday, August 28. This will be the 3lst season for Paul Green's historical symphonic drama which has been acclaimed as "the first and still the best of the outdoor dramas." Using words, music and dance and utilizing spectacle and pageantry, The Lost Colony recreates the story of the first English settlements in America. Sir Walter Raleigh's colonies on Roanoke Island date some 20 years before Jamestown, Virginia and 30 years before the Plymouth Rock landing. A cast of more than 125 actors, dancers, singers and technicians are used by director and choreographer Joe Layton to stage the historical drama in the 2,000 seat theatre located on the site where the original events of the play took place. Mr. Layton, currently represented on Broadway with "Two by Two" starring Danny Kaye, is now in England choreographing two new ballets for the Royal Ballet Company. The Roanoke Island Historical Association, a non - profit organization chartered by the State of North Carolina, is dedicated to sponsoring a con tinuing program of education, preservation and entertainment in commemoration of the first English Settlements in America. The Association also has been largely responsible for developing Fort Raleigh, the country's spiritual birthplace, as a National Historic Site.
