Baron s 4-H Meet Green beans have been an American favorite for a long, long time. The Indians cultivated beans of all kinds. They honored the bean as a giver of life. They planted beans with corn so that the tall stalks would support the tender plants. The Indians had a special way of cooking beans with bear fat. The resulting dish, one Pilgrim wrote, was "in comparably delicious". The Baron's 4-H Food and Nutrition club of Highway-37 on Tuesday April 13. at their meeting, tried a modern version using bacon, onion, and vinegar, which was served with hot sticky buns. They called it Squanto's Beans. Everyone agreed that it was a delicious meal. There were 10 members present and one visitor, Patricia Flowers from Brooklyn. NY. Patricia promised to prepare hot sticky buns for her mother, when she returns home. If you would like the recipe, see any member of The Baron's 4-H Food and Nutrition club of Highway 37 and you may obtain it. The club plans to prepare a breakfast, ' Paul Bunyan" style at their next meeting, using eggs, bacon, and cocoa, with toast. Pres. But is it fact? Recent rulings of the State Board of Education regarding programs for the gifted or academically talented child will bring this belief closer to fact in North Carolina. At present there are 50 school systems out of the State's 152 with no program for gifted students. In February the State Board ruled that State-paid teachers of the gifted would be allotted to school systems on a non-categorical basis - thrown in with the rest of the teacher allotments for exceptional children, which includes the handicapped as well as the gifted. School systems, in effect, will be able to hire these teachers and use them as they see fit. To further equalize such programs, the State Board in March rules on the criteria used in selecting children for them. In the past a child was required to have an I.Q. of 120 or above, A and B grades, and various Hertford BPW Scholarship Rules and Regulations for Awarding the $100.00 Health Career Scholarship Open to senior members of the Health Careers Club of Pequimans County High School to be applied to study for any Health Career.
