I (Ml that with the privilege of living in a community lies an obligation to exerciie our ability toward
the betterment of the community. To accomplish thn it necessary to better acquaint ourselves with
activities around us, not only in our town but in the surrounding area. The more knowledgaable we are
about our town the better we can judoe where our ability to help would He. I urea each of you to be
come more aware of the activities taking place around us and consider offering your ideas and sugges
tions to others in the community. This can be accomplished through one of the many fine civic clubs
in the community, the Chamber ol Commerce, or your town council.
One of the major privileges and obligations we enjoy is our right to vote. Before we vote, however, we
can batter judge if we acquaint ourselves with the qualifications of the candidates offering to serve. I
am a candidate for election to the Hertford Town Council to be voted on June 8. 1 would like to offer
the following information in support of my candidacy and qualifications to serve as on of your
councilman.
I am a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, having served on the Vestry in the capacity of secre
tary. Assisted in organizing the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce in 1960 and serving es the
organization's first treasurer. I am presently president of the Perquimans County Chamber of Com
merce. I am a past president of Hartford Rotary Club, presently member of Board of Directors.
A past member of Hertford Jaycees and past director of Perquimans County Industrial Development
Corporation. I have been a director in Albemarle Area Development Association since 1963, serving as
treasurer, 1964, Chairman of Travel and Recreation Committee, AADA 1966, District Vice-President
1968, President AADA 1969. Presently serving on advisory board to the president. Helped form organ
ization necessary to gat Perquimans and surrounding counties EDA designation.
I am now a member Board of Trustees, Museum of the Albemarle and member Board of Directors,
Bank of Hobbsville.

coastline as seen by America's
astronauts. The back Is covered
with North Carolina scenes,
printed in full color, and
arranged so that they spell out
the words "North Carolina".

Commission and the Department

citizens who are 62 years of age
and over. Now for the first time,
residents of urban areas who
plan to relocate in rural com
munities of ; under 10,000
popultation are eligible to apply
for housing loans from the
Farmers Home Administration,
rural credit service of the U.S.
Department Of Agriculture,
according to Melvin E. Howell,
local County Supervisor.
'Many families in cities want
to move to the countryside but
lack opportunity to obtain home
financing.'; Mr. ; Howell ?said.
Loans may now be made to
families who lack adequate
housing and will become owner-
occupants in a rural community,
without regard to the location of
their present residence or em
ployment."
Howell explained that rural
housing loans are limited to
families who are unable to obtain
financing from other sources,
FHA rural housing loans may be
used by individual families to
construct a hew home, to pur
chase an existing home, or to
improve an existing home. Loans
are made on terms of 33 years
arid the present interest rate is 7-
14 per cent.
