He was an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. He was active in sports and a member of the wrestling team, and received his school's good citizenship award. Madre was offered a scholarship to the University of Idaho, Boise State College and Utah State. He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy by Senator Frank Church of Idaho and will enter the academy June 30. Thomas is the grandson oi Tom and Ida Madre and Mrs. E. W, Dunsmoor, all of Hertford. Scott, En tomology Specialist, with the North Carolina Agricultural , Extension Service at North Carolina State College, will give a demonstration on Vegetable Garden Insects Control, Tuesday, June 8, 1971 at 10:00 a.m. in the Perquimans County Office Building. The meeting is expecting to last about one hour. Dr. Scott will bring to this area the newest information on Vegetable Garden . Insects Control. He will speak to vegetable producers in Perquimans, Pasquotank, Gates, Camden and Currituck counties. Dr. Scott has been with Agricultural Extension Service at North Carolina State since December, 1964. As entomology specialist, Dr. Scott is involved in educational work relating primarily to the safe use of pesticides. A native of Ontario, Canada, he is a 1941 graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College. And Bobby 1 Hertford, , J ' Is ERIE HASTE, JR. seven candidates running for a seat on the council failed to receive a majority of votes cast in the race held May 4th, thus, residents of Hertford will go back to the polls on Tuesday, June 8th for a vote in the run-off He has done graduate study at the University of Toronto and received , his Ph.D . in en tomology from Cornell. University in 1952. Dr. Scott was on the faculty at Ontario Agricultural College from 1941 until 1948. He was agricultural research officer with the Department of Agriculture, Ottaway, Canada, from 1948 until 1953. He was in the Canadian Officers Training Corps from 1940 until 1943. He came to North Carolina as extension entomology specialist in 1953. He left in 1960 and worked in private industry until his return to N.C, State in 1964. Dr. Scott is a member of the United Church and a member of the Entomological Society of America, the Entomological Society of Canada and Sigma XI. He is the author of some 70 papers and publications relating to entomology. Dr. and Mrs. Scott have seven children. W.S.CS. Erie Haste, Jr., In stitutional Representative of the Hertford Rotary Club for Cub Scout Troop 155, presented a United States Flag and a Troop Flag to the assembled pack this past Tuesday May 25. Completes 15 The Winfall Fire Department completed 15 hours of Fire Service Training last week. The training was in hose and ladder evolutions, air packs and pre plan fire inspections. Barber, Robert L. Stallings, and O. Wayne Winslow. The following men attended some of the training sessions during the week: CD. Roach. the fire service training was put on through the College of the -Albemarle with C.T. Skinner Jr. of Hertford as instructor. The College furnished the projec tors, slides, and air pak equipment used in training these fire fighters. Chief Wayne Winslow assigned the members of his department to three fire attack teams for the purpose of training together and making pre-plan fire instructions of some of the large buildings in Winfall. The Air Pak training was conducted at the Winfall Community Building with each fireman crawling through obstacles in the building to simulate actual fire conditions. Chief Winslow stated, "We may be small in number, but I believe we can hold our own when it comes to fighting fires." Assistant Chief George T. Belvidere, N.C. Mr. and Mrs. Hurdle stated today they are striving to keep this cup. They were the 1970 winners in the Perquimans County Vegetable Garden Contest. The 1969 winners were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Felton. Route 1, Hertford. N.C. stated today by Mrs. M B. Taylor and W.C Strowd, County Home Hoffler Earns U.S. Air Force Captain Joseph W. Hoffler, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Hoffler, 323 Dobb St., Hertford, N.C, has helped his Minuteman unit earn top honor as the best missile wing in the Strategic Air Command. Captain Hoffler is assigned to the 351st Strategic Missile Wing at Whiteman AFB, Mo. The 351st has received the annual Colonel John W. Carroll Award, a rotating trophy named for a late missile wing commander. Captain Hoffler, a deputy missile combat crew com mander, and wing personnel were recognized for conducting the bet such tactical operations One Man At Perquimans Library ' - " ' Jerry Sullivan shows Mrs, Silas Whedbee, Librarian, his ink drawing which he calls "Three Faces". - XT Mrs. Sidney Jessup and Mrs. H.A. Whitley admire an oil painting called "Opened Tulips", a bright picture with sunny reds and yellows. Their interest in painting began many years ago when they studied with the late Miss Penny Norcom. Mrs. Whitley has continued to paint, and could have a one-man show of her work. - Jerry Sullivan's one-man art show attracted much interest at its opening on May 27 when more than one hundred persons came to view his varied display of paintings.
