The consolidation of the schools were the beginning oi busing pupils from one section of the county to another section of the same county. ' It was one of the most im portant step of all times to eliminate undersirable schools in our democratic society. . Finally: No good citizen should not be alarmed by busing pupils in our changing society, because it is nothing new. First: It was a waste of time and money -to the State Government and Federal Government. Tbs Snail Farmer Recent years have seen the plight of the small farmer grow steadily. Many who have worked long hours on their farms for years have seen market changes and mechanized farming and other trends force them into bankruptcy.. tbe'latesfwave of failures has occurred in upper Maine where potato farmers have suffered five successive years of bad weather. As a result, many are being ruined. The government - holding F.H.A. mortgages in many cases-is stepping in and selling out the bankrupt farmers. Thus independent and .hard working farmers - who want to work - are being forced onto welfare or relief rolls. Many bitterly complain , that foreclosures, which auction off their farm equipment . at a fraction of its value, are sen seless, since they would prefer to continue working and would do so, and many would even tually weather the storm. It's ironic that in a nation as rich as the United States, which can appropriate loan guarantees of $250 million for one business, and send aid to unfortunate people in almost every country in the world, cannot invest a little more in the future of its small farmer, and keep him working, independent and proud, rather than force him onto welfare PAY 4 LIVING COSTS The Bureau oi Labor Statis' tics reports that pay increases had offset the rise in May liv ing costs. Statistics show more than half of the nation's work 4 force were making 6 per cent more than this time last year which softened the impact of the 4.4 per cent rise in living cost. ' ON MIGRANT TRAINING The Labor Department has announced a S20 million job training program to teach mi grant workers new pKius so they will be able to work year around. II it t s My sons, Jack and Freddie, are great surfboard riders. They can outride me any day, and because there's not much at which they can beat me (yet), they are tickled pink about it. I don't mind. I remember how proud I was the day I beat my Dad at golf. He shook my hand and acknowledged that I was growing up. ' I learned much from Dad. He was a lot of fun, and yet I valued just as much his serious moments. There was no doubt about his deep and abiding love for God. The memory . of his quiet voice speaking of God steadied me through several rougn spots in my lire. That's why on Sunday mornings I start to church with a boy on each side of me. LESSON TEST: Jeremiah 35; Ephesians 5:15-20. Continuing our studies on "The Bible Speaks to Human Relationships" this third unit of studies upon which we are about to embark concerns itself with a variety of aspects of the danger of consumption of alcoholic beverages as they affect the Individual and the family as a whole. In this con nection, the story of the Rechabites brings forecefully home . the fact that temperance is a highly individual responsibility: . moreover, it proves the power mat lies in example. A clan of nomadic wanderers in the desert the Rechabites lived in tents rather than cities, earning their living as shEDherds. rather than agriculturalists. Invasion bv the Babylonians and Syrians, however, caused the Rechabites to set aside their aversion to city dwelling, and they took refuge in the city of Jerusalem. Seeing them there, Jeremiah seized the opportunity to emphasize his teachings and warnings against the city's sinful way of life, and invited them to a meal in a very public place. As was the custom of the time, he set before them wine (a common beverage in Biblical days) and urged them to drink. This the Rechabites refused to do, explaining that it was against the terete of the- faith as set down by their founder, Jonadab. This public demonstration of integrity was exactly what Jeremiah wanted: by thefir integrity the Rechabites rebuked the wayward nation of Judah. There is a lesson for us today in the action of the Rechabites. Jonadab had been dead for more than two hundred years, yet so faithfully had his tenets been taught to the children of the tribe, his principles were very much alive two centures later! This fact alone should give pause to many modern parents and cause them to ask themselves what kind of teaching, by example, they are giving their young people! . We live in stressful times, which take their toll among the weak. Concerned as we are over a growing drug problem amongst our youngsters, we should be equally concerned about the weaknesses of our own generation. For the con sumption of alcohol is just as dangerous as the taking of . drugs. . .it, too, can become habit-forming! Those who consider themselves "fashionable" when they indulge in cocktails, or good sports when they drink socially, in a crowd, are setting a poor example for their children. Moreover, they expose themselves to the dangers of alcoholism, and all the resultant misery for themselves and ' their loves ones. They may excuse their insidious drinking by saying they are under dally stress, and need to unwind They need respite from tensions and worry. They used alcohol as a crutch, instead of God as their spiritual support They ignore the fact that when the aloe hoi-induced rosy haze wears off , the troubles and tensions they Sought to escape are still there -ari very often are compounded by a new set of problems! No truly Christian-motivated ' family would ever so expose . themselves to such dangers, for they are ever aware that God is their stressth! i (These comments are based on outlines of the In ternational Sunday School Lessons, copyrighted by the In ternational Council by Jlelious Education, and used by permission). ...
