Hunters .who kill doe deer on
any of the 19 either-sex deer

Fire Prevention
Week Is Oct. 3-9
Fire's toll each and every day
in the United States is an
average of 33 lives, 1,486 homes,
215 apartment buildings, 30
schools, 10 churches, 215 stores,
offices and restaurants, 139
Industrial plants, and buildings
on 127 farms.
Last year alone, ap
proximately 2,475,000 fires
claimed 12,200 lives and cost the
nation $2.8 billion in property
destroyed or damaged.
Underlying these figures from
the National Fire Protection
Association, Fire Chief F.B.
Nixon points out, is the tragic
fact that much of this waste of
lives and property is avoidable.
If the basic rules of fire safety
were observed at home and on
the job, the record could be far
different.
Fire Prevention Week, which
in 1971 will take place from
October 3-9, serves to re-
emphasize the truth that FIRE
HURTS-that fighting fires is the
job of each citizen, not only
during Fire Prevention Week
but throughout the entire year.
Local observances of Fire
Prevention Week will be
sponsored by the Hertford Fire
Department, Chief Nixon an
nounces. Proclaimed by the
President of the United States
and the Governor-General of
Canada, the week is in
ternationally sponsored by the
rNational Fire Protection
Association.
Features of the week-long
program will include a parade
Saturday Oct. 2 starting at 2
p.m. sponsored by the
Albemarle Flremita
Association.

used by the firemen to pull hose
and nozzles to the fire scene
before any motorized apparatus
was available. Fenton T. Brltt,
Town Superintendent, said that
this two wheeled cart was used
by Percy Elliott, Walter East,
and Charlie White for many
years in the street department.
Tom Jenkins, a veteran town
employee, said the cart was
probably built by Warren Felton
and George Wood in a cart shop
that was formerly located on the
Towe Motor Company location.
A number of Hertford Volunteer
Firemen remember the cart
being used after the water-fire
hydrant system was installed in
Hertford after 1916.
The Hertford Volunteers plan
to restore the pull cart to the
original color and form in time
for the parade on October 2. The
restoration work lr being
carried out at Bill Fowlers Shop.
BUI Fowler, a 37 year veteran of
the Hertford Fire Department,
remembers the first piece of
motorized fire apparatus in
Hertford being a 1925 Model T
