Furniture Store and the Super Dollar Store in their new spacious building in Harris Shopping Center, drew a large crowd of area residents and in addition many from the sorrounding counties. Shown in the top photo is the Grand Opening at Phillips Bros. Furniture Co. located on U.S. 17 Bypass. This business had their ceremony at 8:30 a.m. last Thursday morning. Hertford Mayor Bill Cox was on hand to do the honors cutting the ribbon. Shown in the picture is Mr. and Mrs. Gene Phillips, Mr. and Mrs. Zack Phillip's (parents of the Phillips Bros.) Mayor W.D (Bill) Cox with scissors in hand cutting the ribbon, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Phillips. Grand Opening prizes were given, Mrs. Charles Eley won the first prize, a mattress and box springs, Mrs. W.F. Alnsley won second prize, $50, in merchandise. Stevenson, Executive Vice President of People's Bank k Trust Co., was installed as the new president of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce, at the Chamber's - annual banquet and installation ; of new officers for 1972, held Friday night at the Hertford Grammar School. Stevenson was unable to , attend the banquet and the 1971 President T. Erie Haste, Jr., was on hand for the ceremony. . Marlon Swindell was Installed ; as vice president and J. Emory White was elected treasurer. ' The chamber's new director are W.S. Winslow, George 'Id. Large Crowds - ! A Shepherds arid Foller," "O Holy Night," "Gentle Mary," "As Lately We Watched," "Go Tell It On The Mountain" and "Silent Night." Soloists will be Mrs. Jimmy Hunter, Mrs. Dan Datieker, Miss Margo Perry and Carroll Williams. "Instrumentalists are Mrs. Charles Johnson and Mrs. Chester Winslow. Phil Godwin, speaker of North Carolina's house, was the guest speaker, Godwin of Gates County, told the 165 people attending the banquet that he expects to return soon to private practice. Sybil Jean Bateman, the county's 1971 entrant in the Miss North Carolina Teen-Age America Pageant, provided the evening's entertainment, demonstrating her dancing kills and she recited her treatise on" What American Means To Me." Miss Bateman is also the cover girl for the new county brochure. She is the daughter of ... Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bateman of Rt. S, Hertford. ; . During the banquet, Mrs. J.H. Newbold, ; owner of North Carolina's oldest home, received a certificate from the state's Department of Archives and History. A.L. Honeycutt, manager of historic sites for the Department of Archives and History, make the presentation. The document certified that the Newbold-White house has been entered in the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Dept. of Interior. The National Register : lists properties significant to American history, architecture, archeology and culture. - - Library To Close For Christmas Holidays Six memorial books given to the Perquimans County Library recently are: The International Book of Sacred Songs in memory of Durwood Barber; House Plants in memory of Jacob L. White; Audubon's Animals in memory of Percy Rogerson; Encyclopedia of Art Vol. 19 in memory of Mrs. Nancey Payne; Ghosts Along the Mississippi (old Louisiana Houses) in memory of L.C. Winslow; and The Madonna Story in Art and Flower arrangement in memory of Elizabeth Ann Lawrence. Other new books in the library are: The Winds of War, by Herman Wauk; the Winter Issue of Horizon; The Dept. of Agriculture Yearbook, A Good Life for More People;. Salt for the Tiger, by Tuttle ; Dark is My Destiny, by Hurst; A Civil Contract, by Heyer; and two biographies for young people, Vincent Lombardi and Virgil Grissom. Carmen Sutton, 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Sutton, Rt. 3, Hertford, was elected president of the organization. Douglas Lee, Rt. 4, Kinston, was named national winner in the environmental beautification project and regional winner in the experimental horticultural program. . Melissa Brantley, Rt. 4, Jacksonville, was third place winner in the horticultural use demonstration. Mike Best, Rt. 2, Mebane, received state awards in experimental horticulture, environmental beautification and the production and marketing contest. School Unit Gets $50,345.00 ESAP Grant North Carolina will receive $7,412,437 under the federal Emergency Schoff AsliisfArn Program (ESAP).The money is provided through the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to assist school districts with their desegregation programs. Fifty-one North Carolina school units will receive a total of $6,976,907 and 12 non-public school organizations will receive $435,530. Last year, 82 school units received a total of $6,470,889. The ESAP money, which goes directly to the local school system or organization, is used for a variety of programs to Celebrates v I Bonner and Erie Haste, Jr. In lieu of special favors for the ladies, the Rotarlans voted to give a gift in name of the Rotarlans to Operation Santa Claus sponsored by the : Albemarle Mental Health Association. Some of the programs -'iVve included tte employment of special tutors, workshops on human relations, employment of specialists in community public relations, and publishing newsletters to inform the public of desegregation matters. School Units funded under ESAP included Perquimans County in the amount of $50,345.00. Ninety one School Unites submit ESAP projects, and fifty-one are being funded for Emergency School Assistance Projects for Fall, 1972. The 51 School Unites being funded totaled $6,976,907.86. Rites Held For Eluid Umphlett Eluid Umphlett, 81, of Route 3, Hertford, died Friday at 12:30 p.m. in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Delwin H. Eure. A native of Perquimans County, he was a son of the late Elisha and Mrs. Margaret Bateman Umphlett and the husband of the late Elsie Trueblood Um phlett. He was a member of the Berea Church of Christ and a retired carpenter and Con tractor. Surviving besides Mrs. Eure are one son, Milton J. Umphlett of Littleton, N.C.; one daughter, Mrs. B.V. Lindsey of Dayton Ohio; ten grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral Services were held Sunday at 3:30 in the Chapel of the Swindell Funeral Home by the Rev. Keith Stiltner. "The Old Rugged Cross" was played by Mrs. Pauline Webb, Organist. The casket pall was made of red roses, white Chrysan themums, and fern. Pallbearers were Shelby Bright, Leory Lamb, Garland Eure, Albert Eure, Fenton Eure, Jr., and Bobby Eure. Burial was in the Perry Trueblood Cemetery. E. R. Stevenson Dies At 69 Ernest Reynold Stevenson, 69, of Route 2, Hertford, died Friday at 1:15 am in the Chowan Hospital following a long illness. A native of Pasquotank County he was a son of the late William Lumsden and Mrs. Rhonda Meads Stevenson and the husband of Mrs. Bessie Smith Stevenson. He was a retired farmer and member of Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church where he was a Sunday School teacher for many years and a Former member of the Official Board. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Robert Louis Stevenson and Preston Stevenson both of Route 2, Hertford; one daughter, Mrs. Clella Harry of Route 2, Hert ford; two brothers, William L. Stevenson of Hickory, Va. and Rev. Charles Stevenson of South Mills; five sisters Mrs. Charlie Cartwright of Rt. 2, Elizabeth City, Mrs. Julian Bright of Rt. 1, Elizabeth City, Mrs. Eural Riggs of Chuckatuck, Va., Mrs. Miles McDonald, Fentress, Va. and Mrs. Ivie Cooper of Elizabeth City, N.C.; 9 grand children. Funeral Services were held Sunday at 2:00 in the Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church by the Rev. W.F. Page, Rev. J. Percy Trueblood, and Rev. Coy Saunders. "Near The Cross" and "Face To Face" were sung by Linda Meads, Judy Overman and Danny Meads. They were ac companied by Dany Meads, organist. The trio sang "Beyond The Sunset" at the grave. The casket pall was made of white chrysanthemums, red carnations, and fern. Pallbearers were Charles Smith, Adrian Smith, Jr., Charlie Raymond Cartwright, Johnny W. Two 13-Year-Old Perquimans Girls Still Missing ..linn i .nniiij. dL'Mlt DEBRALOWE Debra Lowe and Theresa Lucas, 13-year-old Rt. 2, Hert ford girls have been missing since December 2nd, are still missing. The girls failed to return home from Perquimans Union School at Winfall where both are students. After attending school Dec. 2 a friend took them to Edenton, believing that the Packing Up Operation Santa Claus A lot of people at Caswell Training Center and Cherry Hospital will have a merrier Christmas this year due to the heart warming response of Perquimans County residents to OPERATION SANTA CLAUS. This was a project of a six county area under the Albemarle Mental Health Clinic to insure that each of the ap proximately 180 residents from this geographical area would be assured of a new gift Christmas. Mrs. 'Keith Haskett, and Mrs. Marion Swindell project chairman from this county, were enthusiastic in their praise of the businesses, organizations and citizens response to this appeal. On Tuesday morning all of the gifts from the six county area were taken to the home of Mrs. George Wood in Camden who was the overall chairman where they were wrapped and tagged. They were then loaded in two vans furnished by Landing Supply Company and Robert son's Laundry for trans THERESA LUCAS parents would pick them up after the Christmas parade. Theresa Virginia Lucas, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence A. Lucas, and Debra Faye Lowe, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Lowe. Both families live on Rt. 2, Hertford.
