Thorpe, President , of Elizabeth City State University; " received notice recently that the National Science Foundation at appropriated $60,850 for a Summer-Inservice Institute for physical science secondary school teachers, under the direction of Dr. Louise N. Sutton, chairman, Department of physical Sciences and Mathematics. The Institutes will be conducted cooperatively with East Carolina University,. Dr. Floyd E. MatthieS, Co director. Dr. Floyd E. Matthies, chairman of the Department of Science Education directed 1971 Summer-Inservice Life Science institute with Dr. Louise N. Sutton as Co-director. This was the first such institute between a predominantly black and a predominantly white in stitution. It was immensely successful. This summer physical science institute will run from June 12 July 21, 1972 and will be available to all 9th grade physical science teachers who meet the following criteria: 1. Floyd Mathews (R above), supervisor from Perquimans County, is shown making the presentation on behalf of the district to Mr. Nixon (L) along with Mrs. Nixon, In making the presentation. Mr. Mathews commended Mr. Nixon on the many conservation practices used in his well planned far ming operations such as: new ditches cut where needed and immediately seeded to fescue; wildlife plantings: tile drainage installed where recommended; crop rotation; land grading and land smoothing. Ed and his wife, Barbara, were also recognized for a good job of landscaping around their new home, completing the picture of a neat and attractive farm unit. During a short business session the supervisors discussed plans to sponsor the Conservation Poster Contest. A report was made that plans are underway to update the District's Long Range Program early in 1972. At the conclusion of the business session, the group was entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Ainsley of Perquimans as they presented a program of slides and narrative on their recent motor trip to Alaska. - f? tuX'JilV -11 ;r:ir.
