Thursday, February 24, 1972 Soaring A study of the Commerce Clearing House in Chicago shows state and local taxes soaring in many states and taxpayers being increasingly burdened by these increases. New York State leads the nation with an average state and local tax take of $652 per citizen (not per family) and Arkansas, with a $252 per capita average, is the lowest taxing state. What concerns many is the rate of increase in state and local taxes. In 1971 thirty of the fifty states raised then tax rates in some form. Most of the nation's larger cities also raised rates, as did many smaller cities. Thus most Americans were hit with both city and state tax increases, plus some federal tax increases. The rate of increase in 1971 was highest in the follow ing states: Alaska, Virginia, Kentucky, Maryland, Hawaii, District of Columbia, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Nebraska, Missouri, North Carolina, Delaware, Maine, Georgia, Alabama, New Jersey, Iowa, South Caro lina, Massachusetts, Vermont and Michigan, in that order. Yet the 1971 increase can mean comparatively little in a state such as South Carolina, where state and local taxes in 1971 claimed only $274 per capita while states likd Navada and California, with lesser 1971 percentage in creases, exacted a toll of over $500 per capita. As the tax take continues to increase, as do prices, it becomes almost mandatory that the federal government be gin sharing some of its revenue with states, to enable them to hold state taxes at their present , level, or in some cases to aid communities sufficiently so that excessive property taxes can be reduced. Rev. Cooke Baptist Delegate Baptist leaders from six associations, including Chowan, held planning sessions this week in Greenville and Ahoskie in preparation for the annual Mother's Day Offering which the denomination makes in behalf of North Carolina Baptist Hospital at Winston-Salem. The meeting in Greenville was held Tuesday at noon at Three Steers Restaurant, and it was attended by representatives of Chowan, South Roanoke, Neuse, and Atlantic Associations. Tuesday night another session was held at Ahoskie at Tomahawk Restaurant for delegates from West Chowan and North Roanoke Associations. Rev. Calvin Knight, thp hospital's director of Denominational Relations, addressed both meetings and explained some of the hospital's needs. Rev. George Cooke of Route 1, Tyner, was invited to represent the Chowan group. "T r mpr v.y. ud to get all the . . But this photo tells the whole story of mankind. The barbed wire symbolizes this earth we live in filled with war, hatred, greed. Transcending the ugliness of this world is the Cross, symbol of Christ's sacrifice for us, the promise of eternal-life. But we don't have to wait till death for a better life. We can do something about that barbed wire. More understanding, and selfless not selfish -action would do much to purge our world of ugliness. God's Church is the natural means of resolving discord. The object of our lesson for today is to make Christ's resurrection as real and meaningful to Christians today, as it was to believers in Biblical times. Immediately after Christ's crucifixion, those who had heard Him teach and who acknowledged His Messianic mission, were plunged into deep despair, and this was especially true of the twelve who had been His close com panions in daily life. So depressed were they that they temporarily forgot Christ's parting admonitions as to their behaviour and beliefs. However, as the devoted little band of women went to the tomb to minister to His earthly remains, Angels heralded the glad news of His resurrection, Just as they had the good news of His birth such a relatively short time before. Upon the word being spread that He was not dead, but living, and His subsequent appearances to the disciples at unexpected moments, the spirits of the people recovered and they went on to witness exuberantly for Him, as they had been in . structed. ..,-'. ' '! Just as me two disciples who encountered the risen Christ on the Emmaus road, could hot wait to tell their story, we must not tarry in spreading ours. Indeed, from this particular anecdote, parallels can be drawn in our own lives, today. At first the two travellers did not recognize their new companion. His presence, however, and the instruction they received as they journeyed, made them so loath to part company with the stranger that they hospitably hade Him to lodge with them and share a meal overnight. Their invitation accepted, upon Christ's breaking and blessing of bread, their eyes were opened, and they were overcome with excitement and joy. V-vvV.?.'-".-'- At this point we would do well to pause and ask ourselves a few searching questions. As we journey through life, just how blind are we. , .spiritually? Are we instantly aware of a deep personal experience with God, when it is offered to us? Do we reach out to those around us, offering of ourselves. . .as did the two travellers on the road to Emmaus? We must ever remember that Christ will enter into our lives if He is invited in. He will not impose Himself on us if we are not ready to receive Him wholeheartedly. He is never an intruder but gladly an invited guest! How much we stand to lose through a lack of spirituality 1 The earthly matters which so often take up so much of our time rob us of riches beyond belief! For where else can we find One who so sensitively recognizes our deepest needs, answering mem and bringing to us such reassurance and understanding? , One cardinal rule, however, must be kept in the forefront of our consciousness. . .if we would have Christ walk with us, we must walk with our fellow men in His name, witnessing for Him constantly, that others may share our spiritual benefits those benefits bestowed upon us by His sacrificial death and ultimate resurrection.
