The shortage of black literature in manv oublic libraries was pointed up in two proposals received for service to the disadvantaeed In discussing these proposals, the worm Carolina Advisory Council on Libraries asked that the State Library Board con sider using some LSCA Federal funds to increase the amount of black literature in public libraries throughout the State. Biographies of: Thurgood Marshall; Jesse Owens; Willie Mays; George Washington Carver; Martin Luther King; Arthur Ashe; Richard Wright; and Benjamin Banneker, famous scientist. These individuals need to know now of their rights and responsibilities so they will get the full benefit of their social security security protection. Security is not onljrj matter of getting the moneyajhen it is due, but of knowing: of the protection that is there. "When planning your retirement or for your family's security. oonsider4 the vaiup of-yfltrrsociaFsecurity protection, know what you and your family can "expect to receive if you become disabled, die, or when you retire." There are free booklets available that explain social security. One particularly good booklet is "Social Security for Young Families". You can get your free copy by calling the Elizabeth City Social Security Office. The number is 338-3931. Congratulations. You just saved $5 by doing your own income tax. Bonner of Hertford, filed as Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from the 1st Congressional . District on February 18. A native of Hertford, Bonner graduated from Perquimans High School in 1963, received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Air Force in 1967, and graduated from North Carolina State University in 1970 with a degree in Sociology. Since graduation Mr. Bonner has been doing an in-depth study of the needs of the 1st District through his work with the Pasquotank.-Perquimans -Camden - Chowan District Health Department and the State Board of Health. In January, 1971, he returned to norm Carolina state University to begin graduate studies. In August, 1971 he accepted a position witn trie President's Council to Hire the Veteran, and at his request was allowed to work in the area including the entire 1st District. Bonner is a cousin of both Lindsay Warren, who served me isi. District as Congressman from 1925-40, and the late Hertbert C. Bonner who served the 1st District as Congressman from 1940 until his death in 1965. Emphasis should be placed on the lfact that for the first time there will be a Republican primary held in the 1st. District for the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bonner is a firm believer that to have progress in the area we must have a working two-party system. A good luook at the areas in which the two-party system already functions will prove that these sections have the development and ad vantages we all want. "When we do not have a working two party system, a freedom of choice is lost, and when freedom of choice is lost, freedom itself is lost," Bonner says. Elliot Richardson, Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, on busing: "When transportation has a counter-productive effect on education values, then it is too much." The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N. C, Thursday, March 2, 1 972 Pa; Veterans Administration .Veterans Administration educate and training has started more than 130,000 women on their way to join the nation's trained personnel pool since the end of the Korean Conflict in 1955, W.R. Phillips, Director of the Winston-Salem VA Regional Office, said today. The number includes: -(-About 29,000 women veterans of military service who have trained under the current GI Bill since 1966, plus approximately 1,000 ex-service women who have received education and training under VA vocational rehabilitation for persons disabled as a result of military service. Some 14,000 widows of men killed in military service, and wives of totally disabled veterans and of those missing in action and prisoners of war. Some 86.000 voune women between 18 and 26 years who are war orphans (children of men or women killed or oermanentlv and totally disabled as the result of service in the armed forces, , or of servicemen missing in action or prisoners of war). Women make up about 48 per cent of the total number of the war orphans who have trained under VA assistance. About 61 per cent of each of the first two groups, Phillips said, were in college and university level courses. Nearly 73 per cent of the 86,000 women war orphans were in college. Currently, about 12,000 women veterans are enrolled under the GI Bill. About 5,500 wives and widows and 35,000 war orphans, of whom about 48 per cent are women, are in training under VA educational assistance. Although the program for wives and widows began in December 1968, it is not limited to those whose husbands were in Vietnam Era service: Some 247,000 women are believed to be eligible for wives and widows educational assistance, including some of those whose husbands served during World War I, World War H, the Korean Conflict, and peacetime. Phillips pointed out that VA provides extensive vocational and educational counseling to help veterans and the wives and widows and orphans cho nrrimatinns. conjpatrble thetMnterests and abilities, I to plan a course of train qualifying them for their cho( objectives. j Women interested in learn! more about VA educatio ' benefits should telephoi write, or visit the VA Regio: Office at 301 North Main Strc Winston-Salem, NC 27102.
