v High School Students Work And Attend School Each day over 23,000 high school junlori and senior leave North Carolina - school cam puses around the noon hour and enter the adult work-a-day world. These students are participating in "cooperative" occupational education programs. ,.' The idea behind "cooperative" education, says Dr. Charles J. Law, Jr., Director of Occupational Education for the state education agency, is to enable students to have practical on-the-job experience in the vocational areas they are preparing to enter. The program is "cooperative" in that the school and community are working cooperatively to train these young people. Students spend their morning hours studying a regular academic curriculum with two periods. set aside for training in their vocational area. In the afternoon they assume a position similar to the Job they Card Of Thanks We would like to thank each, and everyone who helped during our recent fire, especially Jimmy Turner and the Belvidere, Winfall and Hertford Fire Departments. We will always be grateful. NoraWinslow . and children plan to enter when they graduate from high school, and are paid at least minimum wage for the hours they work. According to Law, each student is closely supervised by his occupational education teasher and boss, and Is periodically rated by them. He receives a grade and credit toward graduation for his work. There are six vocational areas in which a student can train. Vocational Agriculture includes agricultural produc tion, supplies, mechanization, ornamental horticulture, forestry many agriculture related services. Distribution and Marketing students learn finance, insurance, real estate, manufacturing many types of service trades. Health Oc cupations deals with all aspects of health related careers, while Home Economics prepares students to work in food, clothing, child care, and home furnishing services. Office Occupations offers accounting, data processing, office machines, and general business services. Trade and Industrial Education teaches skilled or semi-skilled vocations related to trade and industry. Each vocational area has an advisory committee, on both local and state levels, made up of educators and professional people working in these vocations. The advisory committee offers guidance on what programs should be of fered in certain areas of the state and on what should be taught in each vocation that would be most relevant and beneficial to students when they graduate, says Law. Youth organizations have been formed for each "cooperative" education area to give students a chance to meet members of the com munity working in their area of interest and participate in community projects. Each organization has the special emphasis on developing leadership among the young people because, in most cases, they will be entering the work and social community as soon they graduate from high school, Law noted. Although each student who graduates from a "cooper ative" education program is prepared to enter the job market many decide to further their education by attending technical institutes, colleges, or specialized schools in their vocational area. As the present United States Commissioner of Education Sidney Marland has said, "The student should be equipped occupational, academically, and emotionally to spin off from the system at whatever point he chooses whether at age 16 as a craftsman apprentice, or age 30 as a surgeon, or age 60 as a newly trained practical nurse." The "cooperative" oc cupational education program in North Carolina is aimed at accomplishing this goal. Mrs. Cannon Entertains Rook Club Mrs. C.E. Resolutions Of Respect To Mrs. Delaney It is with deep sorrow that we, the members of Woman's society of 'Christian Service of the Epworth United Methodist Church of Winfall, N.C., wish to pay loving tribute to the memory of our dear friend and co-worker, Mrs. Blanche T. Delaney, who was called home to Heaven March 26, 1972. Mrs. Delaney lived a kind and loving life, ever alert and willing to be of service where duty called her. She was always interested in her Church and Community. We shall miss her, and are conscious of a great loss in her going, in our Society. Therefore, be it resolved: First, That we bow in humble submission to Him who doeth all things well, and thank God for one whose life has been a benediction to us. Second, That we extend our deepest sympathy to the bereaved husband, children and relatives, and commend them to Him who alone can give comfort in the hour of bereavement. Third, That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family of the deceased and a copy sent to The Perquimans Weekly and a copy be placed on the minutes of the Society.
