In addition, a law passed by the General Assembly In 1971 also requires a review by the Norm Carolina Advisory Council on Historic Preservation when any state funded or state-licensed project endangers a property on the National Register. In attempting to record for future generations a broad overview of the state's history without undue emphasis on the finer plantation homes ; and mansions, a wide variety of properties have been listed. Representative of the diver sification are the Capitol Building in Raleigh, the old Wilkes County Jail where Tom Dida was held for a time, the Cupola House at Eden ton, a historic church in Trenton, a cotton press in Tarboro, and a turn-of-the-century railroad depot in Hamlet The ultimate goal of the survey is to document the significance of every historic property in the state. Bruce MacDougaL who heads the state's historic survey staff of six persons, emphasizes that local people will play a large role in determing the project's success. Without their interest and cooperation in calling at tention to significant properties in their areas, the task would be much more difficult JESSE HELMS: A CITIZEN "Jesse Helms is not one of your back slapping, hand-wringing, affable garden variety political office seekers." Virginian pilot inn? Or. Daniel M. Lota, the former UNC basketball star and son-in-law of evangelist Billy Graham, recently wrote about Jesse Helms that he had devoted a lifetime of witnessing his faith in America "and not by words alone." Jesse Helms, Dr. Lotz pointed out, was the prime mover in establishing Camp Willow Run, a youth camp for Christ in Littleton. The Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge has given him two awards. The Southern Baptist Convention honored him this year with its Abe . Lincoln Award because of his work for crippled children. Jesse Helms is that kind of man. Working. Doing. Getting things done, not just talking about the problem. All his life, Jesse Helms has worked to make things better than he found them. We need a man like that in Washington. As Dr. Lotz put it: "A man with the Christian strengths possessed by Jesse Helms Is the kind of man we need to elect and support." i i I YES, t bliv in Jmm Hclmt and I want to hdp tlrct him at our Gtiztn -Senator. .
