Broadway and Hollywood never
lured Green away from the
roots of his existence for very
long, although he had several
plays produced on Broadway
and some notable successes in
films. In recent years, Green
has been more concerned with
his symphonic dramas
outdoor plays derived from the
life and history of the people in a
particular locale and produced
in , huge amphitheaters built
especially for that purpose. :
These outdoor dramas started
with ."The Lost Colony",
originally presented on
Roanoke Island in 1939 and still
produced each season. His
second outdoor play, "The
Common Glory", has ; run
nearly 20 years. t
':. The Vagabond Players home
base of operations is the Flat
Rock Playhouse in Henderson
County. The Playhouse was
designated the State Theater of
North Carolina in ; 1961. The
annual tour of high schools in
the state is financed by a $17,500
appropriation from the General
Assembly. V -:
. Past performances by the
group have been received en
thusiastically by the students.
One teacher reported "Even
Students who- 'hate the stuff'
were surprised that drama was
not boring at all. Even the
poorest student seemed to have
new Interest." Another teacher
commented. "These marvelous
performers did in one hour what
we English teachers strive a
lifetime to achieve."
The tour is coordinated by the
Division of Cultural Arts of the
State Department of Public
Instruction.
