eeder Pig Cooperative In Operation Soon
7 Albemarle Feeder P
Cooperative will soon be in
" operation. There are still a few
things to be done at the building
site, The weather will have a
'great deal to do with the final
preparation of the lot. The
building is complete except for
some finish work in the office,
area. '
Sale dates will be the first and
third Thursdays of each month.
The first sale will be announced
later. Any farmer can put pigs
in these sales, whether he is a
member of the Co-op or not.
Also, you should know that this
will be a graded, quality feeder
pig sale. The pigs will be graded
according to their quality and
penned according to grand and
weight.
The sale itself will be unique
to many of our people in that the
buyer does not have to be at the
sale. The barn will be hooked
into the Tele-auction system. A
person anywhere in the State
can participate in the auction by

telephone. Of course, you could
also buy pigs by being present
at the sale. Since the pigs are
graded the buyer. knows. what
quality pig he is bidding on. By
using this system, buyer
numbers are greatly increased.
Under the present regulation
on Swine movement the pigs
going to these sales must be
inspected on the farm. They will
not be accepted at the barn,
without the inspection permit.
Wilt Resistant Tomatoes Introduced
The Venus and Saturn are the
new wilt resistant tomato
varieties. These are the first
two bacterial wilt resistant
tomato varieties ever in
troduced in the world. They
were named and introduced by
N.C. State University last year.
This discovery should be of
interest to those growers having
problems with Southern Bac
terial Wilt and Fusarium Wilt.

Also, when the sales get started
it is.:, important that the
manager, '."Gene Nixon, know
how many pigs to expect at each
sale. You should contact him at
4B2-3734. Also, you will need to
call the Extension office to be
sure of having your inspection
permit. If you have any
questions, about this method of
marketing your feeder pigs,
please call on the Extension
office or Mr. Nixon.
Saturn are smooth, attractively
red, moderately resistant to
radial cracking, and equal to
Floredel, Honstead 24, and
Fireball in over all appearance.
Maturity is from midseason to
late. Fruits have good flavor
and the internal features are
satisfactory. The major dif
ference between Venus and
Saturn is in the fruit shape.
Venus is slightly oblate,
whereas Saturn is a deep globe.
These varieties were developed
for the fresh market and have
performed well in both trellis
and ground trials.
Anyone desiring more in
formation about the two
varieties should contact any of
the County Agents.

1972 Good Year For
School Bond Issues
Voters in North Carolina
appeared more eager to ap
prove school construction bond
issues during 1972 than in recent
years. Thirteen bond issue
referendums were held in local
school districts during the year
and only three of them were
defeated, one by only nine
votes. ,
This continues a trend that
was first evident in 1971 when
four bond issues were approved
and three defeated.
The figures were released by
the State Department of Public
Instruction.
"This is further evidence that
we have turned the corner in
North Carolina and that the
voters once again have enough
confidence in their schools to
invest tax money in needed
construction," commented
State School Superintendent
Craig Phillips.
The bond issues approved
during the year were: Lincoln
County, $4 million; Sampson
County (Roseboro-Salemburg
District), $800,000; Stokes
County, $5 million; Martin

The total value of the bond

was $31,575,000.
The two largest bond issues
proposed during the yea were
defeated; a $20 million proposal
in Durham and Durham

Also defeated, by only nine ;
votes, was a $4 million request
in Cleveland County.
