Vernon James
Potato Head
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) named
Vernon G. James. Elizabeth
City, N.C., to the National
Potato Promotion Board. He
will serve a three-year term
beginning April 1.
The board administers the
potato research and
promotion plan, developed to
increase consumption and
expand domestic and foreign
markets for Irish potatoes
The plan was authorized by
the Potato Research and
Promotion Act, enacted Jan.
U, 1971.
Officials of USDA's
Agricultural Marketing
Service (AMS) said James
was one of 10 new members
and 16 incumbents named, as
well as one appointee to the
unexpired term of a deceased
California member. This
brings the board membership
to 83, representing the 48
contiguous states.
Because of the change in
potato production in 1972, six
states (California, Maine,
New York, North Dakota,
Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin)
lost one member position
each, and one state, (Idaho),
gained one position.
Under the plan, each state is
representated by at least one
member and each state is
entitled to an additional board
member for each five million
hundredweight of potato
production above the first five
million hundredweight.

In the last three years I
have had the pleasure of
attending the Heart Fund
Show. It seems to me that
Perquimans County is
very lucky to have such
fine people to conduct and
direct the Heart Fund
Show. My congratu
lations go out to Jane
Cherry for a fine job
once again.
In the same light I was
real disappointed at the
crowd that attended this
year in support of the
Heart Fund. When we
arrived at the auditorium
a little before eight we
were a little upset at the '
amount of people that
were not present.
I believe that the total
income at the gate was in
the neighborhood of $150.
This in itself tells you that
there were less than 100
people in attendance.
I really don't know
what the problem is
unless the shows are too
long, but on the other
hand if they do not last at
least two hours, people
think they are being
cheated. I hope that in the
future the people in
Perquimans county can
and will support the
Heart Fund. As for
myself and family I'm
sure, you will find us
there.

ABC STORE HAS BIG BUSINESS Monday afternoon, the volunteer firemen in
the county made a rush to the ABC package store on U.S. 17. It seems that faulty
wiring caused slight smoke and where there is smoke there is usually fire.
However, there was no damage to speak of at the local package store and
business went on as usual. (This Photo By Ray Ward)
