The National Rifle
Association of America
concluded its 102nd Annual
Meetings here this week with
the selection of a 30,000 acre
spread in New Mexico as a
National Shooting Center.
The Board of Directors
authorized a feasibility study
to determine if the acreage
near Raton would be suitable
for ranges, conservation
studies and activities, and
administrative facilities.
More than 15,000 delegates
visited the 125 firearms
exhibits; attended the daily
sessions on gun laws, wildlife
research, field firearms
safety, survival tips for
young hunters, National
Hunting .and Fishing Day;
and lined up for hours to get
autogra'phs from the medal
winning members of the
United States Olympic
Shooting Team. The
gathering was held in the
Washington Hilton Hotel.
C.R, Gutermuth, one of the
world's best-known con
servationists, was elected
president. He succeeds Fred
M. Hakenjos of San Diego,
Calif., a retired chemicals
executive. Gutermuth, a
Washington, D.C., resident,
holds office in the North
American Wildlife Foun
dation, the Wildlife Society,
the Izaak Walton League, the
Explorers Club, Boone and
Crockett Club, the American
Association for the
Advancement of Science and
the International Association
of Game, Fish and Con
servation Commissioners.
